Journalists have NO idea what they are writing about.

“all-time high of $5.035 per ounce in March of 2022”

“a few months later back to a low of $3.13 per ounce”

“peaking at $4.35 an ounce”

That is the price per pound. Dumb A$$ Neil Campbell. Stupid journalist.

Copper is currently worth about $2.50 PER POUND. That is bare bright wire. Just wire, no casings, etc.

I saw that.

He’s Canadian.

He doesn’t understand ounces and pounds. Only grams and kilograms....................

Lots of copper laying on the ground as people start running extension cords out to their cars.

The smart ones use long extension cords so their cars aren't anywhere near their house when being charged. Replacing an extension is much cheaper and easier than replacing a house and its contents.

Yeah, but think of all the reduced climate emissions from the reduced electrical demands if the EV drivers can’t charge their vehicles. The thieves are just protecting “Gaia”.

>>the 248 horsepower petrol-powered BMW 530i was significantly cheaper to fuel, at only €10.34 per 100 kilometers, based on a €1.88 (US$2.03) per liter (US$7.9 per gallon) fuel

$8 bucks a gallon for gas and the ICE is STILL cheaper to operate.

I have a trucking company I deal with in Idaho that is also a scrap yard. They crush cars and ship them on flatbeds to Portland where they are turned into rebar.

They also have a machine that strips the casings off of Romex wire. Then it chops it up into little pieces about 1/8” long and blows it into cardboard bins. Until the bins get up to 4000 pounds. Sixteen of these bins go on a maxi flatbed to a copper smelting plant in OR. 64,000 pounds of copper = $160,000 currently.

Ever see what happens if you connect battery jumper cables with reversed positive & negative ??

Charging cables are dummy keyed.

IMHO the main problem is the thieves know that most EV owners aren't gun owners. Especially in Seattle.

Just like on RV’s, the charging cable should be on the vehicle, not on the charger. A 120vac/230vac receptacle does not get stolen.
Dumb idea, but hey, the electric car is a dumb idea.

Those thieves should realize they are lucky we don’t chop hands off like muzzies do.

If copper is $4-$5/oz., many would go out and buy a $200 propane smelter and melt all those 95% copper pennies they have been saving. (Disclaimer: It is illegal to melt US Coins and steal copper) You can already buy 1-pound poured copper bars on eBay.

... under local laws, power thieves faced a maximum penalty of a €100,000 fine (US$108,000 approx.) and 4 years in prison.

Doesn't happen often, probably due to the penalty. That should happen to catalytic converter thieves, and to thieves in general. You steal, then automatic long prison time. As it is now, most thieves aren't even jailed, and if so then quickly released.

I don’t think pennies have been pure copper for quite a while. They’re some “cheap” alloy, just like Ike “silver” dollars, which I call LBJ slugs.

In areas all around Seattle people complain of theft of cars, theft of catalytic converters, theft of tools. When the theft of home charging cables increases that will be a new complaint.

In 1982 pennies went from copper to copper-plated zinc.

Going to have to go that way. Just have outlets at the charging stations, and the cable stays with the vehicle.

The cables and connectors on the chargers around here look like they’ve been through WW3 anyway. All twisted, and beat up.

Actually, no, you blame the assholes who are stealing things.

People are responsible for their own actions. They made a free-will conscious choice to go take something and destroy property of someone else.
