Can Trump win over the GOP as the ‘moderate’ in the race?
New York Post ^ | April 21, 2023 6:25pm | Rich Lowry

Perhaps the most moderate candidate in the field as of this moment is Donald Trump.

If you want a Republican who won’t cut spending or start foreign wars, Trump is still your man.

Added to this now is clearly a discomfort with the fight over abortion in the post-Roe environment.

Trump’s main line of attack against Ron DeSantis is from the left.

He’s hitting the Florida governor hard for his past support for reining in Social Security and Medicare.

He’s also called the governor’s culture-war clash with Disney “so unnecessary” and “a political stunt,” while not entering the fray in the conservative war with Bud Light.

Of course, Trump’s personal power is such that he’s made loyalty to himself the standard for being considered right-wing — orthodox conservatives who reject Trump are more apt to be labeled moderates than Trump himself.

Can Trump win as the "moderate"?

Remember what Bill Buckley once said: "Moderate is a base-stealing word for liberal Republicans."

Perhaps he is “moving to the center”, thinking that he already has the primary in the bag.

DJT will win the nomination only to have the general election taken from him once again. But don’t be glum; even the most dense among us will realize something is terribly wrong and begin the process of taking back America. And it will be glorious.

That he's running as a moderate is laughable.

Trump has the most conservative record as President as any President in recent history, perhaps surpassing Reagan.

Establishment publications like NRO are trying to re-write history that will all remember.

It's DeSantis that is bed with the establishment of the party, which has consistently broke its promises to the base of the party.

‘Trans’ republicans teamed up with the demonic left stole an election, and then claim President Trump lost. As they say the devil is literally in the details.

How about not taking Rich Lowry seriously?

Only in Rich Lowry’s world are pandering to the neocons on the proxy war in Ukraine and to the Chamber of Commerce as DeSantis has done examples of conservatism.

No.

I posted on Inauguration Day 2017 that Trump had six months to disavow the GOP and find 435 Americans to run for Congress under his banner in 2018 before the GOP could recover from the shock and destroy his Presidency.

I was right.

Trump's continued sad devotion to a party that hates him is pathetic.

Don’t confuse the DeSanctimonious supporters with the facts or reality where President Trump is concerned.

It leaves them unhinged!

The alleged radicalism of Donald Trump has mostly to do with his personal conduct, his outrageous statements, his conspiracy theories and his contempt for norms and rules.

They said the same thing about Andrew Jackson.

Bingo!

Lowry wouldn’t know what a true conservative was even if one was to punch him in the face.

He is a National Review Conservative, which means he’s not a conservative at all.

Need proof?

Read his many articles.

Whether the moderates and the weak can win, doesn’t matter.

What matters is tough love, and the country needs somebody that is tough that can move the country away from the woke and weak policies that have the country moving towards incoherence and devastation.

Moderates are not needed. Weaklings, not needed.

To move the country out of the mediocrity that is destroying the country, we need a president that can change things, and he’s already done that once, so, let’s Make America Great Again; he’s the one that can lead us out of the weakness that has befallen us.

Conservatism without Nationalism is like Faith without Works.

And that’s where Trump is the most conservative national candidate in a generation, if not a century.

No other candidate approaches Nationalism. It’s a dirty word to them.
