During his presidency, Barack Obama oversaw the decimation of hundreds of thousands of U.S. manufacturing jobs. Now, without a hint of irony, the former president has unveiled his latest Netflix docuseries titled Working, in which he explores American jobs and the changing nature of work for millions of Americans.
Barack Obama stars in and narrates the series, which is set to debut May 17. In the trailer, which the former president released via Twitter on Thursday, he can be seen visiting families in their homes and places of work as they express their concerns about employment and their economic futures.

There was a big drop in manufacturing employment during the great recession as Obama entered office but for most of his tenure manufacturing employment grew.
Bush II sure didn’t do us any favors, either. To say nothing of Bush I and Clinton’s NAFTA.

When GWB took office in Jan 2001 there were 17.1 million manufacturing jobs.
When Obama took office in Jan 2009 that had catastrophically dropped to 12.5 million.
When Trump took office was at 12.3, having bottomed at 11.4 in 2009.
When Biden took office it was 12.1 million, having bottomed at 11.4 in 2020 during covid.
It is currently at 12.9 million.
