When asked about his origin story, John Damon always told his family he was an orphan from Chicago. Which was true, in a way.

In 1958, the 16-year-old Omaha boy indeed became an orphan — when he shot his parents to death.

And nine years later, after he sawed through prison bars and escaped the Nebraska State Penitentiary, the fugitive did flee to Chicago to launch his new life.

But back in those days, Damon was known by a different name: William Leslie Arnold.

I wonder the back stories on these type of blurb articles.
Were the parents unbearably abusive to him or siblings he was trying to protect? Were the parents given a pass or wink nod from authorities unaccustomed or willing to lend credence to child abuse complains from children? Was he adopted from an orphanage in Nebraska just to do heavy slave type labor of a farm or other place by callous abusive “parents”?
Or was he a psychopath who whimsically murdered his parents and fled?

Think of it as a reverse abortion. Child kills parents.

Murderer yes, but the available evidence indicates he was truly repentant for his sin. He went on to raise two sets of kids into respectable citizens and never raised his hand to anyone else.

I find myself much less harsh on those who sin and then spend the rest of their life trying to atone for their offense. As opposed to those who never admit they sinned in the first place.

Or was he a psychopath who whimsically murdered his parents and fled?

I doubt that as there would be a bigger trail of bodies behind him.

Nope.

Were the parents given a pass or wink nod from authorities unaccustomed or willing to lend credence to child abuse complains from children?

Maybe but apparently not in this case.

Was he adopted from an orphanage in Nebraska just to do heavy slave type labor of a farm or other place by callous abusive “parents”?

Nope.

Or was he a psychopath who whimsically murdered his parents and fled?

Maybe. Nope.

His family recently thumbed through their father’s old leather-bound Bible. They believe the book dates to his Chicago days, and they’ve known him to read it several times front to back.

In those aging pages, they found a common theme to the passages Arnold had noted and highlighted.

Sin and forgiveness.

Rotting in hell to be sure, but there is a lesson here:

So you don't believe Jesus Christ died for our sins and the forgiveness of sinners?

Fascinating.

The SLA in the 70’s was the bizarre one to follow. Patty Hearst and all. She was a victim but public opinion insisted she be found guilty due to the ‘sins’ of her father and his empire.

This guy got away with it and functioned about as well as could be expected. Is there room for forgiveness when it comes to murder? Parents need to be supportive more than domineering.
