Biden administration criticized for Syria mixed messaging Why the Arab League's decision to bring back Assad has 'destroyed' US leverage in Syria

Middle East Institute senior fellow Charles Lister discusses the significance of the Arab League's decision to welcome Syria back into the multilateral body and the Biden administration's response to Arab states' re-engagement.

Syrian President Bashar Assad appeared at an Arab League summit in Saudi Arabia for the first time in more than a decade Friday after his country was expelled in 2011 for its brutal crackdown on peaceful pro-democracy protests during the Arab Spring.

Arabs doing scummy Arab shit? Who would have thunk it? They don’t even care that China is genociding the Uyghers, a Muslim group. They take that Chinese money anyway and continue to undermine western interests.

“after his country was expelled in 2011 for its brutal crackdown on peaceful pro-democracy protests during the Arab Spring.”

LOL... The CIA using Facebook -created- the peaceful protests that were the precursor to ISIS. It started as far back as Bush. Wikileaks posted the documents where the local Ambassador was cultivating separatist groups to exploit.

Remember back to that time. Assad was the most liberal (in the classical sense) of any leader in the middle east. In Syria you could be a Christian, any kind of Moslem, and yes, they had two remaining Synagogues. Women could travel, hold jobs, divorce, check into a hotel, drive a car, get an education, and dance to music on Latakia beach while drinking a glass of Syrian made wine.

Nowhere else in the middle east was even close. So the State Department, CIA, and USAID got busy.

The destruction we created in Syria is hard to measure. The refugee flood into Europe, the arms smuggling from Syria, the flood of migrants to Africa, ISIS, the need to flood in large numbers of Iranian soldiers to fight our rebels, and hundreds of thousands dead.

More propaganda.

We, under Obama, trained and funded terrorists that became ISIS that slaughtered the Christian population there.

Then, Trump had to go in and wipe the ISIS bastards because they became a national security.

Neocon foreign policy must die.

All for nothing. For this idiotic war, we switched sides in the war on terror, destroyed Libya, Syria, and unleashed a flood of migrants into the EU. All to overthrow the most liberal leader in the middle east. Jordan is close, but it still labors under a King.

It was truly deranged.

Western countries are undermining Western interests all on their own, they don’t need any help.

BTW, I'm no fan of Assad, he is a butcher and responsible for one of the largest recent genocides, including via chemical weapons, however, in terms of global aspirations, the Mehdi dreamers of the Islamic Republic of Iran is dangerous outside its borders...

To a large extent, the Neocon's "war on terror" was really a "war to make the mideast safe for Israel."

They are just opening their eyes to the truth. There was a Civil War in Syria. We backed one side, Putin the other. Putin and Assad won. The Arabs see the world is changing fast and they want to be on the winning side—Russia/China block is looking like winners. Iran and Syria are Russian Allies and if their is a World War—the Arab states want to be at the peace table sitting on the side of the winners. For greed the Deep State has overseen the destruction of the reputation of the West.

Assad should be lauded for stopping Obama’s “Arab Spring” of installing Islamic militants in power. The terrorists were rolling up the Arab countries without much of a fight until they got to Assad. His resistance gave the Egyptians the backbone to rid themselves of Obama’s puppet government. Then a long hard fight that ended up pitting the CIA backed militants against the US Army back militants, a little help from Russia and he managed to pull it off.

"make the mideast safe for Israel"

I remember a radio host, when a wacky antisemite would call and say some similar thing, the radio host would let the wacko talk, just a little, and the host would then whisper..."it's theJewwwwwws", mocking the wacko, and letting everyone know another antisemite had gotten past the call screener.

I remember President Trump bypassing the PLO and making treaties with and between some of Israel's neighbors. The Jew-haters tried to state that no peace was possible until a Palestinian State was recognized and established. Since many of these same countries still do not recognize Israel's right to exist, they could care less about peace.

They’ve been going after Assad because he wouldn’t allow gas pipelines to go through his country to supply Europe as a favor to Russia.

Please define this "right to exist".

What does it mean, beyond self-defense and killing anyone who challenges it?

A "right" has to either be a natural right, or granted by someone.

If it's a natural right, like life, how is it enforced for a man whose sailboat sinks in the middle of the ocean? If it's a granted right, who granted it and how is it to be enforced?

I do not see how Israel can survive the Iranian nuclear weapons program. And how does a theoretical "right to exist" overcome that?
