Almost five decades into his celebrated, Texas Radio Hall of Fame career, legendary Dallas sports radio host Norm Hitzges is hanging up his microphone.
He made the announcement shortly after 10:35 a.m. on Thursday during his "Norm & D Invasion" show that he co-hosts with Donovan Lewis on Sportsradio 1310-AM/97.6-FM The Ticket each weekday from 10 a.m. to noon.
His last day on the air will be Friday, June 23.
When he turns off his mic that day, it will mark the end of a remarkably storied career. Hitzges has worked 48 years as a sports commentator in North Texas.
Hitzges, 78, was the host of the first sports-focused morning radio show in the country when he began broadcasting on 570-AM KLIF in 1986. In 2000, he left KLIF to join the ranks at The Ticket, where he's been a midday host on the top-rated and award-winning sports station ever since.

He started a morning sports talk show in 1986 - about the same time as Rush debuted, and was certainly the very first popular morning sports only radio program in the country.
While FM radio, and to a lesser extent AM radio, will creep along until the FCC takes away the last of their frequencies, there is no doubt that the drive time experience of our youth is ending.
Good night, Mr Hitzges. You have earned a well deserved rest, and good health to go with it.
A ping out to the Texas Ping list, founded by Windflier.
While Norm is still with us, he won't be on the air except on special occasions, like the Christmas Normathon benefiting the Austin Street Shelter.
Another special Texas winter edition for your perusal.
As always, please FReepmail me if you want on or off the Texas Ping list.
Blessings, and stay cool!
Norm and Randy Galloway ruled North Texas sports radio for most all of my life. Great talents!
Randy is still with us, and tweets occasionally.
It was a great time to enjoy sports in DFW.
Randy has that authentic Texas twang good and deep.
