Semi true.

The military had poor stopping power with the .38 S&W Long. Since expanding bullets were verboten, the .38 cals were doing complete pass throughs, with not a lot of shock value.

The reissued the .45 SAA Colts (.45 Colt Long) and that got the job done.

When the Army decided on the semi auto pistol, they wanted something to match the .45 Colt Long cartridge.

The only right answer to "why did you shoot him n times?" is ”because after I'd shot him n-1 times he was still a threat."

So, shoot once. He's still moving. Double tap. He's stopped moving. The threat was neutralized.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. It passes the "what would a reasonable man do" standard.

Even cops empty the magazine without hesitation because it is the bast way to neutralize the threat.

That's not how we were trained. Two rounds to center mass and then check all around you to make sure the world is a safe place. Then reassess the threat. When I see officers doing mag dumps it makes me cringe. Watch the YouTube channel PoliceActivity to see some really crazy stuff.

I’ve had law enforcement from here in Virginia and other states tell me that if I need to use a gun “don’t stop shooting until they ain’t moving.” Or I run out of ammo. The good guy with the gun did right.

I did 20 in the Army and a short stint with County Sheriff. Still, I am a civilian, not up to date on training, and have the low threshold of "Feared for my life" guiding my actions. Any attacker I shoot can count on many rounds expended. Ammo is (relatively) cheap, Life is precious.

Years ago a young acquaintance, small guy, was being terrorized by a group of thugs here. Everytime they would see him they would beat his ass. He started carrying a pistol. Got jumped by thugs at a party. He shot one 3 times. Twice “would have been fine” according to the prosecutor. 3rd shot was to the head. While he was on the ground.

That was 20 years ago and the poor guy is still in prison. So I’ll have to disagree that you should “keep on shooting..”
Unless you want to spend a long stretch in the pen.
