The only right answer to "why did you shoot him n times?" is ”because after I'd shot him n-1 times he was still a threat."

So, shoot once. He's still moving. Double tap. He's stopped moving. The threat was neutralized.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. It passes the "what would a reasonable man do" standard.

I’ve had law enforcement from here in Virginia and other states tell me that if I need to use a gun “don’t stop shooting until they ain’t moving.” Or I run out of ammo. The good guy with the gun did right.

As cops are trained to do, you keep shooting until the threat is neutralized ... completely so ... until your life and the lives of other potential victims in the immediate vicinity are no longer threatened by the armed attacker. Or ... you could "wing him", put away your weapon and try to reason with the killer.
