California’s electric rates are among the highest in the country. Three big power companies propose charging fixed rates based on income, saying low-income customers will save money. Critics doubt it’ll work.

My electric bill will be put in my dog's name
Pull your meter and cut it through with butter knife blades.
When they remove the tap at the pole, run your own Nomex cable.
I’m not a high income household, but this really angers me.
Who died and made these people gods over our ‘deserved’
income, and the penalties for such?
This sort of thing should be actionable, and these people
have to sit in prison for a decade or so, to reflect on
their idiocy.
May's bill was 15.8¢/kWh (13.3% YoY increase).
Could be summed up as: From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.
Where have I heard that before?
We are in the midst of a heat wave right now in So Cal - and my A/C has been on 24/7 for the past few days - with no end in sight.
I am not wealthy by any means and the a/c is set to 75, hardly cool - I have elderly relatives with health problems and may have to turn the a/c down.
I used less electricity and water than the same month last year but my bill is far higher.
I suspect the local pols will consider me and my neighbors “rich” (most are elderly on fixed incomes) b/c we own our own homes (and that isn’t fair to those who don’t) - and jack up our bills even higher.
Today it’s PG&E. Soon it will be groceries, clothing and other services.
So far our little electric co-op as not raised our rates nor proposed any increases that I am aware of. I do watch these thing pretty close.
“Pull your meter and cut it through with butter knife blades.

You did that?
No, I work for the power company.
Inner city blacks do that.
I have heard stories of rural folks running wires parallel to high voltage distribution lines and inducing current in their wire.
Is that an internet ‘story’ or a real thing? I know inductance is real, just not what THIS reality is.
Obviously, you are joking about putting it in you dog’s name, but many households include people of various income levels. Why not put the account in the name of your teen or adult child who earns $30K a year?
I had a relocation job where I was moving a 34kV primary line.
It was directly under, by many feet, a 220kV line.
The new poles were installed and the wire was pulled.
At the end of the day, the linemen pulled the temp grounds off.
The 220 heated up the lines underneath enough for a pole mounted bolt to set the pole on fire, which burned down, and ripped off the new wire.
Foreman got fired…
One of the ‘benefits’ of having a state income tax is that the state knows EXACTLY what your income is. I suspect states without an income tax would have a tougher time implementing this.
“Foreman got fired…”
Did you find another job after that? Just kidding!
Lol, I’m an engineer/designer.
The guy probably enjoyed a couple weeks off, then got a new job.
There’s nowhere near enough Linemen to keep up with work.
I’m better off designing from home, while talking trash on here…

I know, you’ve mentioned it before that you’re not out in the field. Just couldn’t resist the dig...but quite a story too.
The combo of accident prone and poor impulse control doesn’t mesh with primary voltages…
In theory one could run a 5000BTU room air conditioner using about $500 worth of solar panels.
“1 BTU is equal to 0.293 watts”
“it is important to know that the running watts are lower than the starting watts. We need high power for a few seconds when the AC starts, so we need to consider this wattage too.”
