Read the article. After much self aggradizement about how members of his class are so much better educated, elite, etc, he concludes that they are doing the right thing (see below) .

The current “elites” are of mediocre intelligence, who dimly understand that they are only “elite” because of the wealth and connections they inherited from their parents.
They understand that there are lots of non-elites out there who are younger, smarter, and more energetic than them.
This frightens them.

I don't like analogies but it's as if the United States had hundreds of thousands of restaurants in the 80's but a 'liberal elite' takeover made all of them ONLY serve the taste and preferences of 'elties'... and the rest of us are left out and can't even afford to go out - no less enjoy the expensive and creepy 'fashionalble' food served.
It's nice David Brooks is getting a clue - but it's also a threat.
Liberal 'elites' can easily be dismissed as 'nuts or vile' if they're pushing crap like "75 million Americans are members of a cult'... etc. We all know the BS they say about us is insane. But if they can target us because they're starting to understand us their tactics might become more effective.
(People in the black community are starting to use the term 'white liberals' to mean the same thing we say as 'liberal elites'... everyone is starting to hate them... we're all catching on)

And that is why they are setting up barriers to entry for elite positions.
Degrade the quality of the public schools, to reduce potential competition.
Use Ivy League degrees as a screen for any elite position. Then get rid of objective academic qualifications for those schools, instead with weight on the “application essay” where they can screen for Regime supporting woke.
(also scream about “equity” while maintaining legacy admissions at the Ivies)
This is a well worn path of elite decay and decline.
For example In the UK prior to WW2, entry to Oxford or Cambridge required Classics (ie Latin and Greek) which the private schools taught, and the state schools did not.
And an Oxbridge degree was the requirement for an elite position.
