NJ is now the only state in the US where drivers are not allowed to pump their own gas
NBC New York ^ | August 7, 2023 | Andrew Selsky

New Jersey drivers will now stand alone as they sit in their cars while gas is pumped for them.

That's because for the first time in 72 years, Oregon motorists will be able to grab a fuel nozzle and pump gas into their cars on their own, after a decades-old ban on self-serve gas stations was revoked. Gov. Tina Kotek signed a bill on Friday allowing people across the West Coast state to choose between having an attendant pump gas or doing it themselves. The law took effect immediately.

So now the Garden State is the only state that prohibits motorists from pumping their own gas. A few countries also ban it, including South Africa, where attendants offer to check fluid levels and clean the windshield, with tipping expected. New Jersey’s 1949 ban on self-service pumps remains a source of pride for some in a state where bumper stickers declare “Jersey Girls Don’t Pump Gas.” And since the state generally has lower gas prices than New York and Pennsylvania, many drivers from neighboring states cross the state line to fuel up.

Tina Kotek

I will stand back for this one. Or perhaps turn away.

Actually the pumps are underground on the tanks. Dispensers are what one utilizes to put fuel in a vehicles tank.
Red Jacket and FE Petro are the main brands. Kind of being a smart ass, but it was my trade for 25+ years.

I was doing maintenance on a tank at a QT in Lewisville near DFW and this woman comes over and demands I fill up her rental. She was hot and let me see up her dress, so I was obligated. She was from Jersey. She bought me a coffee.

Hey for the Jersey jokes do you like the country you live in? Then take a moment and read up on how we kicked the Redcoats ass at places like Trenton and Princeton.

“Lighten up Francis”.

I lived in NJ for 9 years after college - beautiful state! Seriously. I lived in a small town (Clinton). It was amazing to have so much rural countryside and think that it still had the highest population density of any state. (They must REALLY cram them into Newark!)

And yes, the history was great too.

We still go back to visit and enjoy it. Although the politics suck, but the state I’m in now is rapidly gaining in the suck department.

When I was making regular trips there back when, the ‘attendants’ market of employees were nearly all Indians.

How so? You’re making a blanket statement based on your own prejudices and in the process displaying your intellectual shoe size.

New Jersey gave legions of it’s sons from the Revolution, The Civil War, WW1(my grandfather barely survived that) to WW2(uncles of mine barely survived that too as did my father-in-law) so think before you go bad mouthing your fellow American from any point on the compass.

I get defensive about my state and I don’t apologize for it.
I grew up in Kearny. Named for it’s most local famous son Union general Phil Kearny and the Kearny ship yards built dozens of war ships that won us WW2.

The 39th Oregon Governor sure could pass as a man, as a Democrat of course. 🙂.

How’s things? There are problems here, but few places in this country offer mountains, beaches, and farms so close together.

Some of the Indians are students working for “uncles” (because I don’t believe they’re really allowed to work legally), and the merchant caste that sells gas and convenience store stuff can’t work on cars - so they often rent out the bays (and you’ll see another sign over that area). Some just convert the bays to a convenience store; few seem to have working bathrooms...

I remember a business trip to Oregon in the early 2000s where I dared to pump my own gas. I didn’t know about the absurd law. The gas attendant came out and yelled at me and gave me the stink eye like he caught me masturbating in public. Stupid law.

Some idiot tweeted if they get rid of full service gas pumping in New Jersey she was moving. It’s her right.

She didn’t think that threw to much.
