Always, ALWAYS respond to correspondence from the court (appearances etc). NEVER ignore them

Only enforced in the case of contumacious refusal to comply with valid discovery demands. I doubt that’s the case here. Discovery documents are always chronically late in just about every civil case. Imposing dismissal of the Answer and default judgment is a rare sanction.
