Petraeus says post-war Israeli occupation of Gaza likely ‘inescapable

Israel will likely have to occupy Gaza post-war, due to fears Hamas would reestablish a stronghold in the region, according to former CIA director and military expert David Petraeus.

“This is about ensuring that Hamas cannot reconstitute itself,” Petraeus said.

Aaron David Miller, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, sat down with Petraeus for an event the think tank hosted Tuesday, where the two discussed the United States’ role in international conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas war.

While Petraeus echoed the Biden administration’s concerns that Israeli occupation of Gaza would be unfavorable, he admitted that it is likely inevitable, at least post-war, because he didn’t believe there would be a Palestinian rule that could effectively rebuild and restructure Gaza.

Duh! Do you think that Israel will make this mistake again?

Well, who else is going to do it? The UN would be a joke they couldn’t find a rocket stash under their own schools. Israel probably has no choice but to retake civilian control and security.

I would certainly hope not. You give these animals an inch, and they take a foot, along with your life, and the lives of your loved ones. And then you're demonized in the media, and by the U.S. and European governments for protecting your borders, and your people.

In the intermediate term there's no other option. The "legitimate" government of Gaza is the Palestinian Authority to whom I suspect it will be returned in some form and at some time. Hamas wasn't elected in Gaza, they overthrew the legitimate government. They did roughly tie Fatah in the legislative elections (2005) which is usually referred to as "elected", but Fatah formed the government and governed Gaza until the coup. What other options are there? The UN? They're keeping peace in Lebanon as I write this. The EU or US? Probably the only alternative is Israel keeping order and some government being formed.

I don’t see an alternative. To allow an enemy to control the territory is not an option, an enemy that sees itself as openly at war with you.

Egypt (Gaza) and Jordan (parts of West Bank), but they wouldn’t consider it. They don’t want to absorb terrorists.

Exactly. And believe them when they say that they want to murder you. They are not human. They have proven that they are not human by their actions. Another human can be negotiated with, a non-human, cannot.

That is why, even in war, we treat the enemy respectfully. Because we know that there will be a time when we are not at war. And getting to a time of peace happens quicker if there is mutual trust and respect... even though we are doing the best to kill each other.

These people are ruled by savagery and cannot be trusted.

I agree that Egypt and Jordan are the only alternatives, in cooperation with Israel, but as you say they don’t want it.

It is a conflict of western society vs a 5th century theology that makes its people subservient.

But the problem — Islam and its leaders want their members subservient and not individuals thinking for themselves. A common characteristic of all cults.
