President Michael D. Higgins has appealed to countries that have withdrawn funding from a relief agency in Gaza to “think again” and provide support to help avoid a “catastrophe”.
Several countries have frozen funding for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) while a review of Israeli allegations that some of its staff took part in the Hamas attack on 7 October is under way.
UNRWA has 13,000 staff in Gaza and helps to educate 30,000 children.
In a statement released today, Mr. Higgins urged the countries, including the UK and Germany, to revoke their decision.
Mr. Higgins is among many heads of state and government leaders who have made the call. …

Don’t do it. It is corrupt as anything. Egypt has built a huge staging ground outside of Rafah. Just let donors bring in the food and medicine directly. Keep UNRWA out of it while you close the entire agency down. It has been of no good for anyone as far as politics and war. Sure maybe they have been just OK at food delivery but plenty of other agencies, groups and NGOs can do that. UNRWA has been a bad actor, and has not only not helped advance the cause of peace at all, they have been complicit in attacks, in hateful teachings in schools, and at best ‘looked the other way’ when Hamas used their facilities to built tunnels and hide weapons etc.
And I should add, UNRWA is based on an absurd premise that Palestinians are perpetual refugees. You could be 6th generation born and raised in Gaza and they still call you a refugee. No other refugees in any other part of the world are considered refugees after they have settled somewhere and new generations are born and raised. Only Palestinians get this special status. It’s a stupid policy that only ramps up political rhetoric and it creates the conditions that make Palestinians unwilling to even try to build something for themselves. Hamas has to go, and UNRWA has to be closed, and new groups created to replace their humanitarian missions.
My mother’s 80 now, born on the north side of Dublin near the Phoenix Park. She finds the city unrecognizable now, not just due to the new building there but mainly because of the utter cultural rot that set in seemingly instantaneously. Never mind the entire republic. She refers to the current prime minister as “brown nose” . . .
SOMEONE needs to prove to him that UNRWA is supporting HAMAS & HIDING their weapons UNDER the UNRWA facilities.

Higgins was a member of the Labour Party, which was founded by communist James Connolly in 1912. They are connected to Sinn Féin (the IRA’s political arm) via the former Democratic Left party, which they took over. So Higgins has ties to the IRA, who have not been shy about their alliance with the PLO.
He knows. He doesn't care. Ireland supports HAMAS and considers their fight righteous. They equate HAMAS with the IRA.
When I was younger, the IRA were regarded by the republic of Ireland as terrorists and not heroes.

The government and Catholic Church opposed the them, but the ROI was the number 1 source of foreign support for the IRA, and a safe haven.

Following the outcome of the 6day War in 1967 I was offered employment in Gaza that would entail working with UNRWA. I turned it down. It was corrupt then. Still is.
