virgin@media.virginrecords.com I'll be contacting Virgin records. Will never purchase a CD from them while that bloody little sot has a contract with them.

"
So, he's got the right to say whatever he wants, right?"
Isn't that infuriating? How many times in the past have we heard some idiot say something so totally of the wall that we wanted to choke him, only to be told "he's got the right to say whatever he wants"?
I absolutely hate that response (it usually comes from liberals).
I recall what Robert Bork said not long ago: "He may have the right to say it, but it's still contemptible". I also recall another fellow, somewhat further in the past, say "Against stupidity the very gods themselves contend in vain."
Words to live by.
Although, to tell you the truth, this is all a little hard to believe. This goes beyond the run of the mill crass stupidity of your typical 18 year old. Fiction?

First the Beatles and the Jesus comment...
I remember the comment well - it was John Lennon in 1966 who had said, somewhat offhandedly (he was discussing religion with a journalist in England and saying he believed at the time that Christianity would shrink) that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus Christ. Amidst the hoopla the comment inspired (especially when it did appear in the U.S., in Datebook magazine, and taken slightly out of context, as I recall), there was one vicar who replied, "There is a lot of validity in what Mr. Lennon said. To many people, the golf course is more popular than Jesus Christ." But certainly John Lennon observing the Beatles more popular than Christ in 1966 (and those who were there at the time could tell you that it probably seemed true enough, considering) isn't even remotely close to the grotesquery of Lee Ryan saying "Who give a f@ck about New York when elephants are being killed?"

Forget the past for a moment. How many times in the here and now do we see it happen right here on the FREEP? Like it or not, that is free speech, ladies and gentlemen. But we have just as much right to denounce in turn comment we despise as contemptible (as, to name just one example, Judge Bork did in the quote you cited yourself), as does anyone else have to make contemptible comment. Frank Chodorov was right: Let them rant their heads off - that is their right, which we cannot afford to infringe - but let us keep from them the political means of depriving everybody else of the same right. (And anyone who doesn't think an animal rights extremist such as young Mr. Ryan appears to be would try depriving everybody else of their free speech right to dispute his view, if granted any position of political authority, you sure haven't been following the ways of PETA, his obvious kindred, that closely...)

Whales and elephants? What about pigs? Does he care about pigs as much as these other animals?
If so, I would love to meet him. That way, he could 'feel good' about himself right up to the death (guess how that would happen), knowing his remains would be contributed to the noble cause of feeding about 20 hungry pigs whom I'd have deliberately starved for at least two days beforehand.

"Probably "under the influence" of an illegal substance?"
probably on 9/11 too, so he doesn't remember it! i heard they might make it big in kabul, that could be their next road trip!

The lessons of history provide general repercussions of behavior. Individual ego versis the standard of recognition of the time. Beatles, self centered statement-reaction-decline of popularity and public revulsion. Will the historic example hold true for this event, we'll have to wait and see.

The "historic example" is in a sense false: the furor over John Lennon's Jesus remark lasted barely a month (Lennon apologised in short enough order, saying his belief that Christianity was shrinking didn't exactly mean he held un-Christian thoughts: "Sometimes," he said at the press conference, "we forget that we're the Beatles") and the Beatles' popularity never waned, to the day they split up for good in 1970. It still hasn't: it was their anthology of their number-one singles (though an incomplete one: "Please, Please Me," their first British number one, didn't appear on the set) was the best-selling album of 2000. We don't know yet how long the furor, if any, over Lee Ryan's remark will last, though bear in mind that Blue isn't exactly as popular now as the Beatles have remained. If one of, say, *NSync had made the "Who gives a f@ck about New York when whales and elephants are dying?" remark, that would probably kick up a huge furor, *NSync being, for better or worse, extremely popular these days. A member of Blue making it isn't really going to kick up as big a stink about it as other members of the band seem to have feared.
But that said, I should further say this: Asking "Who gives a f@ck about New York when whales and elephants are dying?" about the slaughter of the innocents 11 September would seem to be way more of an affront and an outrage than observing that one's own musical group just might be more popular than Jesus Christ in a certain place and time. Saying words to the effect that religion is for a time less influential than a certain musical group isn't exactly the same thing as saying human beings slaughtered in cold blood matter less than dying animals. If someone cannot conjugate the distinction, he should be pitied. If someone will not conjugate the distinction - and there are those, alas, who would so refuse - he should be condemned.

First the Beatles and the Jesus commentFor a time, they were more popular than Jesus. But they just didn't have the same staying power.

What is truely contemptible is that he personally witnessed the towers being destroyed. I wonder if he watched as the people in the top floors hugged one another before they jumped to their dead.

Save the Whales! Collect The Whole Set! I for one am concerned about the whales and elephants. It seems everyone today wants to kill a whale or elepehant. That's gonna leave us illegal poachers out of business. I remember when there were only a few of us, and back then we all knew each other by name. Now it's like I go into the backcountry, or kayak next to a hump whale, and everyone is tripping over each other, or ramming each other on the water.
I'm serious! My supply of tusks is dwindling, so my scrimshaw business is down.
My summer's end, whale rib barbecue was a flop this year....and with the onset of winter, I need more blubber to boil down for heat and light.

Give the guy a break. Just because his priorities are different than yours doesn't mean you should jump down his throat. Try and
understand people for a change. It's your kind of thinking that has us bombing innocent Afghanis instead of negotiating with them.
And you know I'm being sarcastic.
