MELBOURNE, Fla. - U.S. 1 is closed in both directions early this afternoon after an explosion at Christmas Auto Sales.
Some units of Mobiland-by-the-Sea trailer park have been evacuated. The park is a few miles south of the Pineda Causeway north of Melbourne.
No injuries have been reported in the 12:15 p.m. blast.
Melbourne police said the explosion occurred inside a unoccupied car at the lot.
Brevard County Fire Rescue has evacuated 15 to 20 units so far at the trailer park.
District chief Mark Francesconi said evacuations may reach up to 100 to 150 units.
"We want to get them out because in this case there may be some secondary device," he said.
Brevard officials are in the process of enacting the reverse 911 system, in which residents of l homes within 2,000 feet of explosion site will be contacted.
The Brevard County bomb squad has arrived on scene and is in the process of searching to see if other explosive devices are in the area. A sheriff's helicopter is in the air above the scene.
Traffic on U.S. 1 is being detoured on Coquina Ridge Drive to the north and Post Road to the south.
This was a REFERENCE to the earlier February explosion in Florida on US 1.
I wonder if we have a MAD PIPEBOMBER...who hates US#1, Christmas and Florida citizens????
It would wreak havoc on the economy. The restaurants would lose out on all of the "Early Bird Dinner" business. Plus think of all of the Social Security money that would be removed from the state lottery sales.
How 'bout we annex your Yankee grandparents in ... Florida back to New England and New Yawk?It would wreak havoc on the economy. The restaurants would lose out on all of the "Early Bird Dinner" business. Plus think of all of the Social Security money that would be removed from the state lottery sales.
Yes, but on the plus side I could drive the 13.7 miles to work in significantly less than the 35 minutes it currently takes... I would see fewer right turns from the left lane... Less cars with turn indicators permanently on...

Car explodes, U.S. 1 is shut in the Middle Keys
Updated at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27
A grey Saturn exploded at U.S. 1 and Sombrero Beach Road about 9 a.m. today, injuring a 51-year-old woman inside and closing that intersection, at mile marker 50.
Authorities say the explosion was the result of a bomb.
The woman was identified as Marathon resident Evon Leach. She was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami by the Monroe County Sheriff's Office Trauma Star helicopter.
She suffered numerous broken bones and well as multiple lacerations.
The blast tore a hole in the car's floorboards below the driver's seat and blew out the windows. There were reports that the vehicle also was pushed at least 15 feet forward due to the force of the explosion.
A second bomb was thought to be in the car, and a bomb squad from Miami-Dade County was sent to the scene. The FBI also was en route. However, further investigation revealed there was no second bomb.
Traffic was being rerouted around the scene of the explosion. Since the location is considered a crime scene, it will be at least several hours before U.S. 1 is fully reopened, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office.
This site will be updated as news becomes available.
Anyone see a red pickup truck leaving the scene?
You have a computer in your shower?
Really, in all seriousness, its probably a domestic situation or she owes someone some dough (or her husband or child owe some dough).
