Can We Start Operation Blue Star?
3/20/03 | SUSSA

I’d like to suggest that Freepers support the families of the troops. The troops left wives, mothers, and children to fight for us. They should not have to worry that these family members are not being cared for.

It can be simple things like cutting grass, running errands, checking with them to see that they are Ok, etc. It can also be offering emotional support, someone to talk to about their fears, needs etc.

If we can make this a national program with thousands of Freepers taking part it will mean a lot to our troops. Every act of kindness and support for their families is a blow for freedom and a real blessing to our troops.

Maybe we can coordinate this through the FR USO Canteen or through a continuing thread.

Is anyone interested? Any suggestions to make this workable and make it happen if we do it?

BUMP! But how can we find local military families? We can't post any personal information on the net, and we would have to have an introduction before knocking on doors. A little more details, please.

In WWII people hung small banners with blue star on them for each family member in the military. They hung banners with gold stars for a killed family member. Gold Star Mothers were neighborhood projects even after the war when I was a kid.

Kids ran erands for Gold Star Mothers. The men painted and such for them etc. As neighborhoods broke up and the war became less a dominate fact of life this changed.

I thought of the blue star because a thread said blue stars were coming back.

Already do...I live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, home of 1st TAC Fighter Squadron, Langley AFB, Norfolk Naval BAse, Ft. Eustis, Ft. Monroe, Oceana Naval Air Station, Various Marine installations, Camp Elmore, Camp Pendleton VA Beach, Portsmouth Coast Guard Base, Regional NAval Hospital, Portsmouth, Norfolk Naval Shipyard (formerly Gosport) Newport News Ship Building.

All of these installations and families have been affected by the current events. In this tiny area of the United States, the population has diminished by 1/3. The families that remain are in need of support. Come on down to VA!

We can offer this to the military and ask that they let families know we are doing it. There may be other ways. I'd like suggestions

I had your exact thoughts, but I wondered how I would find the families. There must be a way and I know it would be a blessing for me if I could do anything for them. I don't want the soldiers worrying about their families needs either and am in if someone smarter than me can figure out how we do this.

Do you live near a military installation? Even a Guard/Reserve Base? That's a start. If you do, chances are, you live next door to a family.

Can we make this an official FR program? Can you use your contacts to help get the word to the families?
