The interesting thing is that the troll is too stupid to understand the message of this fine Rush tune. The "oaks" and "maples" in this song are english and french canadians. This was Neil Peart's way of telling the whiney french canucks to STFU.

For me, this song was able to crystallize the problem with affirmative action in my 15 year old brain, and started me down the road to being totally conservative. The song also turned me into a hard core Rush fan...

I'm fairly sure (just from reading the lyrics; I know nothing of Rush's political views) that this is meant to satirize the levelling principle of which Russell Kirk wrote:

"The only true forms of equality are equality at the Last Judgment and equality before a just court of law; all other attempts at levelling must lead, at best, to social stagnation. Society requires honest and able leadership; and if natural and institutional differences are destroyed, presently some tyrant or host of squalid oligarchs will create new forms of inequality."

For they passed a noble law, And the trees are all kept equal By hatchet, axe, and saw.

If the word "noble" is not meant ironically, then whoever wrote this song has very little skill at expressing his views.

I hear you. These liberal scumbags hear the song and don't bother to find out what the original intent was.

Losers.

You have no idea how foolish that sounds.

Don't try and use Rush to advocate your loathsome socialist propoganda you slug.

Exactly.

Someone seems to be missing the frying-pan-to-the-face-obvious analogy of the hatchet, axe and saw to governments' solution to unfairness being to make everyone equally miserable.

I'm sure Neil Peart would never agree to being called "conservative" in our sense of the word, but this is a clearly libertarian song, not a liberal one.

You can choose a ready guide, in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill..
I will choose a pupose clear, I will choose freewill.

We've taken care of everything, the words you read the songs you sing, the pictures that bring pleasure to your eye. It's one for all and all for one, we work together having fun, never need to wonder how or why
......Hold the red star proudly high in hand.

There are those who think that life has nothing left to chance,
A host of holy horrors to direct our aimless dance.

A planet of playthings,
We dance on the strings
Of powers we cannot perceive
"The stars aren't aligned,
Or the gods are malign..."
Blame is better to give than receive.

Chorus
You can choose a ready guide in some celestial voice.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.
You can choose from phantom fears and kindness that can kill;
I will choose a path that's clear
I will choose freewill.

There are those who think that they were dealt a losing hand,
The cards were stacked against them; they weren't born in Lotusland.

All preordained
A prisoner in chains
A victim of venomous fate.
Kicked in the face,
You can't pray for a place
In heaven's unearthly estate.

Chorus

Each of us
A cell of awareness
Imperfect and incomplete.
Genetic blends
With uncertain ends
On a fortune hunt that's far too fleet.

Chorus

See, that's the problem. This person has been posting left-speak all morning, and so I assumed he thinks this is good. Maybe it is ironic, maybe he does know that. Then again, maybe he doesn't. But since he doesn't seem to want to respond, we won't know.

;)

Waiting for the winds of change
To sweep the clouds away
Waiting for the rainbow's end
To cast its gold your way
Countless ways
You pass the days

Waiting for someone to call
And turn your world around
Looking for an answer
To the question you have found
Looking for
An open door

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

What you own is your own kingdom
What you do is your own glory
What you love is your own power
What you live is your own story
In your head is the answer
Let it guide you along
Let your heart be the anchor
And the beat of your own song

You don't get something for nothing
You can't have freedom for free
You won't get wise
With the sleep still in your eyes
No matter what your dreams might be

It is better to use the hatchet, axe, and saw on the oaks if their selfish attitude is to leave the maples in the shade.
