Jim Wallis on "Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It"
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 2/23/5 | David Ian Miller

Posted on 02/23/2005 10:18:18 AM PST by SmithL

With U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton extending an olive branch to abortion opponents in a recent speech and other congressional Democrats peppering their language with faith-based phrases, it's clear that some members of the party are trying to find their religious voices.

Some might call that political pandering. But Jim Wallis, a left-wing evangelical Christian who believes Democrats need to affirm the role of faith in shaping public policy, sees these developments differently. He argues that conservative Republicans have taken control of the discussion about religion and morality in this country and have used hot-button issues like abortion and same-sex marriage to divide the electorate. Now, he says, Democrats need to get back into the conversation, and these recent moves could be an effective ice-breaker.

Wallis -- who edits a progressive Christian magazine called Sojourners and founded Call to Renewal, an evangelical ministry that reaches out to the poor -- is the author of a new best seller, "God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It."

Wallis likes to pretend that all of the people attacking religion aren't from the left.

He's trying to gloss over the true intentions of the left.

Conservative Christians in today's world oppose murder by abortion, murder by sexual license, murder by tyranny, and murder by terrorism.

Jim Wallis, a so-called "liberal evangelical" supports murder by abortion, murder by sexual license, and murder by terrorism.

Just because we both reject tyrants is no reason for Christians to listen to him.

This is going to prove to be awfully hard when the Dems are dependent on donations from wealthy anti-religoius types.

The view that gays and abortion are the prime motivators for the emergence of Evangelicals as being firmly on the Right is simplistic. I think it has to do a lot more with the campaigns to remove all symbolism from the public square (spearheaded by self-professed liberals in most cases) and the condescending attacks leveled at even the mildly religious by the MSM. In addition, demographic data on who Evangelicals are and where they live all but dictates that they will emerge on the Right anyway. If it weren't for the left's jihad against the Judaeo-Christian belief system, these same "Evangelicals" would instead be talking about the environmentalists causing hardship for farmers and ranchers or complaining about the erosion of gun rights.

Look who is getting it wrong! I must say quite the opposite is true.

I agree with you as I don't understand how any Christian could support that party. I have a wonderful neighbor, former pastor, and the greatest man you could meet. He is still supporting the Democrats and I just don't get it!

It seems to me that because democrats have taken such an extreme position on abortion (favoring partial birth abortion) they allow republicans to be appeal to conservatives and moderates on abortion. Part of politics is about defining your opponent and because libs are so extreme on abortion they allow republicans to define the issue as mostly dealing with partial birth abortion. IMHO!

This Wallis guy just seems to want to ignore the abortion issue and change the subject ASAP. I dont think thats gonna work.

Wallis seems to have his priorities out of line. He says the democrats are more in line with Christ's message on poverty, and simply plays up this stereotype that somehow conservatives , even politically conservative evangelicals, are only interested in making themselves and their "buddies" wealthy.
He fails to see, however, that it might be quite possible that conservative evangelicals are concerned with poverty, but that the believe that having a lower tax rate will boost an economy and create the thing that has pulled more people out of poverty than any Great Society (I'm from Eastern Kentucky, I've watched it first hand) social program ever did...jobs.

I heard him (Jim Wallis) speak tonight, in person. He is actually quite slick and fairly convincing, if you don't pay close attention to what he's saying. People tend to dimiss him as a nutty heretic on FR, but a lot of people are not going to see through his rhetoric, and I think this is a problem that needs to be taken seriously.

I getting sick of hearing his "Since when did being a Christian make you pro-war, pro-rich, and pro-American" line, the implication being that anyone who is not a leftist like him likes war and makes people poor by stealing from them. These aren't that religious conservatives stand for, but he seems to be trying to make people believe it's true by saying it over and over again.

Jim Wallis is dangerous to true Christianity. (see my latests posts to see what they're up to now)

I am on their mailing list to keep up with a lot of their silliness. His heresy is crossing into all denominations and people are supporting it without even realizing it, because the leadership of the denomination is doing it without making it clear to the 'grassroots' who pay their bills with their offering money.

Another thing people may not be aware of is that many religious groups have partnered with the UN. Check out
http://www.un.org/dpi/ngosection/asp/form.asp and pull down "all" from the region menu, and 'religion and freedom of beliefs' from the activity menu. Right now there are 62 relgious organizations in the world associated with the UN under that activity. Bread for the World is listed under a different category. You can also search by keyword. Make sure your church or denomination is not supporting the global one world relgion/government.
