When I had a Mormon friend tell me that. That it was the “catalyst” for something else. I remembered that scripture about that they would rather believe a lie.

Of course, that is the only alternative left to them. Nimbley did a good job showing the papyri to be the materials used, and spend years trying to prop up smith's translation efforts.

“We have often been asked during the past months why we did not proceed with all haste to produce a translation of the papyri the moment they came into our possession. Well, for one thing others are far better equipped to do the job than we are, and some of those early expressed a willingness to undertake it. But, more important, it is doubtful whether any translation could do as much good as harm.”
- Dr. Hugh Nibley, BYU Studies, Spring 1968, p. 251

“... the presence on the scene of some of the original papyri, including those used by the Prophet in preparing the text of the Book of Abraham and the facsimiles wi their commentaries, has not raised a single new question, though, as we shall see, it has solved some old ones.”
- Dr. Hugh Nibley, Improvement Era, May 1968, p. 54

“Of particular interest to us is the close association of the Book of Breathings with the Facsimiles of the Book of Abraham. It can be easily shown by matching up the fibers of the papyri that the text of Joseph Smith’s Pap. No. XI was written on the same strip of material as Facsimile Number 1, ... our ‘Sensen’ Papyrus is closely bound to all three facsimiles by physical contact, putting us under moral obligation to search out possible relationships between the content of the four documents.”
- Dr. Hugh Nibley, BYU Studies, Winter 1971, pp. 160-161

“I don’t consider myself an Egyptologist at all, and don’t intend to get involved in the P.G.P. [Pearl of Great Price] business unless I am forced into it....”
- Dr. Hugh Nibley, “Letter to Dee Jay Nelson,” June 27, 1967, reprinted in Mormonism – Shadow or Reality? by Sandra and Jerald Tanner, p. 308

I went to a talk by Dee Jay Nelson. Did they ever excommunicate that guy?

He was their Egyptlogist that did an about face on the church.

Nibley, I thought was pretty amusing. I “peeped” at his book a few times.

As far as I know, he was not excommunicated. He did get in trouble for trumping up his Egyptologist credentials though. May be some one else here knows.

I remember he (Nelson)said he didn’t believe JS was a prophet and that the only reason he wanted to stay a Mormon was because of the relationships he had developed.

The talk was in the Skaggs Chapel (Baptist Church) in Salt Lake (~1975).

Matt. 7: 6
Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you.

Get out the HOSE, instead!

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

KJV John 8:43-45
43. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.
44. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
45. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

I would think in a court of law that would carry some weight?

I would think it would get Twain SUED for defamation of character!

(How'd THAT 'trial' turn out?)

Dream on that is not what happen but that does not matter to those who love to spread gossip!

I just HATE 'gossip'!!

I replied, “Never mind, all is well—I am well enough off.” I then said to my mother, “I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.”

***he wouldnt have got himself shot breaking out of jail...

fork tongue the mob was breaking into jail to lynch them!***

St Paul and Peter both were protected by GOD. The jail doors opened for them and chains fell off.

They had no personal armed guards to protect them. When they had finished their course they wrote letters to that effect. they knew their end was near. Only then did they suffer martyr's deaths.

Compare J. Smith. he had armed guards, the Danites to protect him. God would not.

When in jail, the doors didn't open so he called for his Danites, not GOD, to break him out.

When the mob came for him he thought they were his “boys” coming to break him out. When he realized they weren’t and the jig was up, he didn't call on God for protection, he trusted in his revolver, then bailed out the unbarred window when shot.
He certainly didn't act of one who trusted in God. He certainly didn't die like Vincent Price!

Psa 105:15 [Saying], Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

Interesting. I note that the 'relationship' aspect is a very strong barrier for some exmormons to detach from. In part that there are good relationships established, in part due to conditioning.

Back about 40 years ago, when I was a W.A.S.P., I found that men had not done a very good job of agreeing on what Heavenly Father was trying to tell us in the Bible.

Too many denominations.
Too many ways to be saved.
Too many good men have, and are, studying, praying, and coming up with too many different opinions as to what the original word of God was and/or what His Word means.

I became “non-denominational”.

Since Brother Keller speaks of authority in this article, I would like to ask you this.

Why do the teachings, that you follow, have more authority then the many other teachings that men teach in the many other denominations?

+++++++++++++

Does your authority come from your study, or from personal revelation?

And does it include the authority to teach your teachings as if you you were the mouth of God?

So, you are saying that God has given you personal revelation as to what teachings are correct and that you are responsible to teach this to others.
