Bump
Discipline here is a common theological term and does not refer to spanking.
In any case: "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness" - 2-Tim 3:16 (NIV).
Piper spends an undue amount of time on the private lives of couples. And zones in particularly on non-essentials that should be between the husband, wife, and God.
He is also unduly judgmental about Christian wives and mothers in particular- especially those who choose to work or get an education — and on single women who aren’t missionaries.
Biblical women in ancient Israel did not live according to his dictates either.
And in trying to be politically correct about racial issues in the church, he only further exposes his own lingering prejudices.
I appreciate that he is a proponent of interracial adoption, and is the loving father of a black child...but he should deal with his own problematic heart before condemning men like Trump for racism. (And from my vantage, Trump is hardly the racist or sexist by comparison to Piper’s own issues.)
I like the “let he without sin cast the first stone” part.
You’re right to be turned off by Piper’s wording.
Not to mention that Paul was uniquely commissioned by Christ to carry forward the Gospel message. Paul might be a man but not just any man.
“”All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” - 2-Tim 3:16 (NIV). “
Nice try, but once again...those are simply more words of Paul. So basically you used the words of Paul, to tell me that the words of Paul, are God breathed.
“Paul might be a man but not just any man.”
Well he ain’t infallible.
Just went to a wedding...the bride and groom had been living together for 10 years...the bride had 3 grown children from 2 previous husbands...the preacher says...”you may now kiss the bride”..say what? The’ve been stuhping for 10+ years, and the kiss seals it? ...This is people worshipping the ceremony, and not the reality. If it’s not Gods word properly understood(i.e historically., grammatically, theologically, etc)...then don’t believe it. You can pick what you like based on your culture, but God doesn’t care about your thoughts...If you knowingly disobey Gods word....just forget it (live as if Gods word is meaningless) ...and take your post life chances on your own understanding. Good luck from all the “drama” you will get from being unfaithful to your future wife pre wedding....
Then what’s your solution? They not marry and correct their situation all they can?
Should they break up and stay single in solitary misery?
Why did you even go if you have so little respect and good wishes for their marriage. You could have gone and pulled the wings off flies or something maybe...
“Christians Shouldn’t Attend Weddings of Christians Who Fornicate and Believe It’s OK: John Piper”
would it be OK to attend weddings of Christians who fornicate if you DON’T believe it’s OK?
There is a difference between a REPENTANT and UNREPENTANT person.
If one still believes that fornication is fine, then one is UNREPENTANT.
I don’t think a church that wants to be faithful to scripture can support that
I'm trying to understand on what authority you base your Christian faith. Is your faith based strictly on the recorded words of Jesus - or something else?
Certainly, Paul is not the only author in the New Testament to condemn fornication and other sins.
The book of Revelation is attributed to the apostle John. For 2000 years, orthodox (not the denomination) Christians have believed that John recorded God's vision and words when he wrote the Revelation. Do you believe the book of Revelation is John recording God's words?
"And He said unto me, It is done. I AM the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is thirsty of the fountain of the water of life freely. He that overcomes shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son. But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death. - Revelation 21:6-8
I have served on church staff, and this is a serious issue.
Being tolerant of human failing, and avoiding legalism, is one thing - but turning a blind eye so as to avoid conflict and keep the people attending (and tithing) is another.
You are correct.
Too mant people conflate, innocently or disingenuously, judgement as discernment with judgement as condemnation.
Jesus Christ said, Go and sin no more; he did not say, Go and sin some more.
Did Jesus get drunk? Did he encourage drunkenness? He was so accused by the hypocrites, but they were lies.
Your ersatz argument is sophistry.
Eating and drinking with sinners is not equatable with advocating their sin and participating in their sin.
On the other hand, I, who have been in ministry, have had to wrestle with these real-life issues, and have lived a chaste life at considerable personal cost, am “turned off” by the smart-ass, punkish flippancy of many of the posters on this thread.
You are talking about two different groups. In the above quote he was speaking to the self-righteous accusers.
To the accused he said "go, and sin no more"
