The Heineken Beer holiday commercial below taps into a sad reality for many families: divorce and remarriage.
In these situations, most of the focus is on the happiness of the couple, with little to no attention paid to the effects on the children involved. For children, it typically means being shuttled between two different homes on a regular basis. They also must endure the pain and awkwardness of seeing their parents dating and possibly marrying others. As their parents set down the cross in order to pursue personal happiness, the children must shoulder it.
Even when the children of divorce become adults, much of the suffering continues. Not only are the emotional wounds still present, but the logistics of dealing with blended families present many challenges.
Leila Miller has explored these and other issues in her excellent book: Primal Loss: The Now Adult Children of Divorce Speak.
As for this commercial, it is lighthearted in its representation of the oddities, but it is ultimately a sad commentary.

Monsignor Pope Ping!
I’ve read this book and got two copies for my pastor.
Very good book.
Do check it out!
Probably should also read the book: “Divorce Poison” and “Stepmonster” which shows that a lot of children in this situation begin to notice that their parents turn to buying their love, befriending them as adult confidants and peers, compete to be the house with the fewest amount of rules.
Two materialistic Christmases, Birthdays, Easters, Halloweens, you name it. Not good for society all the way around. Leads to the entitlement snowflake mentality. Also divorce is initiated by women almost exclusively and the family courts view dad as simply a walking ATM.
The most dangerous place for a chil is in a home with mom’s boyfriend, and sometimes a second husband. STEY MARRIED FOR YOUR KIDS SAKE!!

Male children left with single mothers have it particularly bad. Almost all these situations are abusive - the overwhelming majority of women cannot handle the raising of male children on their own.
Sadly, these are the times we live in.
P.S. We will never see the likes of Dean Martin again...

There is a tinge of sadness there. Merry Christmas, if you can.
The actual most dangerous place for an unborn child is in its own mother’s womb. Once born, the rigors of a busted family can come into play. If people realized the gravity of the vows they make before God when they marry, divorce would never even be considered an option. Commitment. “I’m gonna’ do this if it kills me!”
True.

Great comment!
My two late parents divorced years ago.
I have learned to forgive them both.
It is one year today since my 93-years-young mother has passed.
Ma, I love you!
It has been 20 years this year since my father has passed.
Got to thank Hollywood for planting the seeds.
