A PHILANTHROPIST has stepped forward to fund excavations at the ancient city of Herculaneum in Italy, where scholars believe a Roman library lies buried beneath 3m of lava from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79.

I always thought the Villa of the Papyri was completely cleaned out long ago.

Apparently not.

Unfortunately, they may have waited too long. The ground water gets into everything in the area, and the existing excavations may have exposed any remaining parchment to air.

It's not actually in Herculaneum proper, it's a suburban villa in the hills outside the town.

It is believed that there are thousands more scrolls in the building, much of which lies beneath the modern town of Ercolano, and that they may include lost works by Aristotle, Livy and Sappho.

You picked the wrong people to screw with. Hordes of librarians overran the Roman Empire in the fourth and fifth centuries AD, and you're probably next.

Herculaneum really is a neat place. The area is compact, at least compared to Pompeii, and below the ground level of the surrounding town/apartment buildings. You could walk through there and really get a sense of what the place was like. Very well preserved. Of course that was quite a few years ago, so maybe it's changed a lot. Then again... cogs turn slowly over there, except on the roadways.

Pompey is like a big park full of ruins (I don't know how I walked/waddled through that place 3 days before my son was born, just crazy lol). It's nice, but ruins all start to look alike after a while. Herculaneum has always stood out as impressively different from the usual piles of ancient rubble.
