Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry was given to most military personnel in Vietnam.

His political party is more important to him than his country. No doubt Nancy Pelosi and the usual suspects told him, "You're a former marine. Speak out against the war and we'll see that you get a lot of publicity and some good committee assignments!"

Murtha obviously didn't learn much in the Marines. Marines don't quit.

Murtha's a "hawk"?

Don't let the MSM put words on your screen or the next thing you know, you'll be thinking Chuck Hagel (R, France) is really a "moderate".
Hildebeast voted for the war, too.

As far as labels go, only one thing's certain:
they're both DemoncRats.

Everybody's entitled to their opinion on the Iraq war

Yes, but for a senior congressman to publicly signal to both the enemy and the Iraqi people that 'cut and run' is an option only serves to aid and abet the enemy. He is smart enough to know this ... I believe it is his purpose because the Democrats cannot afford a successful outcome in Iraq.

Just the latest Dem to be bought out and paraded around.

New strategy - Get a Democrat Military Hawk to call for the withdrawal and more credence will be given.

I absolutly hate people who sell out their country for the DNC.

Benedict Arnold (January 14, 1741 — June 14, 1801) is America's most notorious traitor. A general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, he defected to the British side when he became disaffected due to perceived grievances he had suffered at the hands of the Continental Congress and the military. Corruption charges filed against him by Pennsylvania civil authorities and his mounting debts also contributed to his decision to switch sides. He strongly opposed and was very indignant at the decision by the Continental Congress to form an alliance with France, having experienced a bitter defeat at the hands of the French and their Indian allies during the French and Indian War.

In 1780 he formed a plot to take control of the fort at West Point, New York and hand it over to the British. This would have given the Tory forces control of the Hudson River valley and split the colonies in half. The plot was thwarted, but Arnold successfully evaded capture by Continental forces. As a reward he was given a commission as Brigadier General in the British Army, along with a reduced award of £6000 sterling.

Thank you sir, I love American history. Benedict Arnold was a general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. Just because someone once served bravely in the US Service does NOT make them immune from treason. John Kerry served in Vietnam, and as soon as he got out, he ran over there and met with the communist leaders. He is a traitor. John Murtha won two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. Well he once did a good thing, but now he is energizing the enemy. He is a traitor. Thanks for the historical point of view about Arnold, it does make a good point about all of this. A decorated vet can still be a traitor.

Bingo!

Personally I think everyone, politicians, press and us are making a much bigger thing out of this than it really is.

His statement is surely more "hawkish" than let's say one from Dennis Kucinich.

I wonder if we at FR give too much credence to the dying media. After all, that's how we get our fodder for threads. We're dependent on it in a way. But all statistics and electoral evidence show that people tune them out more and more, the more they blather on. That should give them pause and us hope.

President's smackdown comments today against Dems & Hagel

President Bush was later questioned about Vice President Cheney's remarks from yesterday:

Question: Mr. President, Vice President Cheney called it reprehensible for critics to question how you took the country to war, but Senator Hagel says it's patriotic to ask those kinds of questions. Who do you think is right?

PRESIDENT BUSH: The Vice President.

Question: Why?

PRESIDENT BUSH: Well, look, ours is a country where people ought to be able to disagree, and I expect there to be criticism. But when Democrats say that I deliberately misled the Congress and the people, that's irresponsible. They looked at the same intelligence I did, and they voted -- many of them voted to support the decision I made. It's irresponsible to use politics. This is serious business making -- winning this war. But it's irresponsible to do what they've done. So I agree with the Vice President.

PRESIDENT BUSH: I think people ought to be allowed to ask questions. It is irresponsible to say that I deliberately misled the American people when it came to the very same intelligence they looked at, and came to the -- many of them came to the same conclusion I did. Listen, I -- patriotic as heck to disagree with the President. It doesn't bother me. What bothers me is when people are irresponsibly using their positions and playing politics. That's exactly what is taking place in America.

John Murtha won two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry

Not to demean the man's gallantry or service at all, but being a hero on the battlefield has no relation whatsoever to being able to understand the broader strategy, or to understand world politics and how that works.

God bless John Murtha for his service, but he's really undoing much of what he worked so hard for by his reckless comments.

Can someone locate the Hardball transcript from John Murtha's 2003 or 2004 appearance? It is being said he made critical statements against the war then - just as harsh as is words yesterday. There has been other occasions in the last two years where he has shown he is not among the "finish the mission first" crowd. But the news media is treating this like he had some great transformation from hawkish pro-war to anti-war.

WOW! Who knew? If he would've make a point of mentioning this he might of won.
Was he awarded any medals?

I love how military service somehow makes someone a brilliant military strategerist. If he served for 37 years and didn't retire as General Murtha, I'm thinking he wasn't all that bright. This doesn't demean his service, which I assume is un-Kerry-like, but that doesn't give him superpowers, either.
