Another factor might be contributing to the thinning of some of the Antarctica's glaciers: volcanoes.
In an article published Sunday on the Web site of the journal Nature Geoscience, Hugh Corr and David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey report the identification of a layer of volcanic ash and glass shards frozen within an ice sheet in western Antarctica.
"This is the first time we have seen a volcano beneath the ice sheet punch a hole through the ice sheet" in Antarctica, Vaughan said.
Volcanic heat could still be melting ice to water and contributing to thinning and speeding up of the Pine Island glacier, which passes nearby, but Vaughan said he doubted that it could be affecting other glaciers in western Antarctica, which have also thinned in recent years. Most glaciologists, including Vaughan, say that warmer ocean water is the primary cause of thinning.

Karl Rove HAS certainly been busy since leaving the WH, hasn’t he?
I guess we saw a smaller version of this phenomenon in Iceland in the nineties when the Grimsvotn volcano blasted through the Vatnajokll glacier and the resultant outflow took out the coastal highway.

No kidding. Something besides CO2? Who’d a thought?
Clearly not the *scientists* who are investigating global warming.
Yeah, but aren’t volcanoes caused by global warming?
“weather” beneath our feet.
“weather” in space.
Al Gore, there is more in heaven and earth then dreampt of in your philosophy.
Nowhere is the evidence of global warming as striking than near the earths poles. CBS News correspondent Scott Pelleys report brings him to the top and the bottom of the world, where scientists point out the effects of the warming trend. He also speaks to NASAs top scientist studying climate, who says the Bush administration has restricted what he can say about global warming.
But, wait. They would have ignored it anyway or quoted the British scientist who said, interesting but global warming is more important:
"It may be possible that heat from the volcano has caused some of that acceleration," says British Antarctic Survey professor David Vaughan, who stresses though that global warming is by far the greater likelier cause.

This isn’t even really a new theory. When I searched here to see of this was already posted, I saw articles mentioning this connection in 05 and 06
This was on the news Saturday night (I think NBC) and they were blaming it on global warming. The “fact” that global warming could reach down nearly 2 miles through solid ice was said to be a grave concern and an unsolved mystery as to how man affects the climate.
We just need to put a stop to this. Volcanoes are illegal! We dont like them, so they should not exist! Volcanoes are a violation of my living constitutional rights!
I demand the right to live a volcanic ash free life!
Someone needs to organize a music concert to raise awareness against volcanoes!
Did you hear that rethuglicans want to give volcanoes an unfair tax break?
But, the volcanoes that come from across the border are ok. Illegal volcanoes, doing the erupting that American volcanoes wont do!
Racist.
No , no it’s SUV’s
How do you blame volcanoes on “man?”
And, although no volcanoes have erupted under the ice, magma under Greenland turns out to be the heat source causing the ‘ice river’ that so exercised the AGW crowd when it was first discovered.
One wonders whether volcanic activity under the arctic ice cap in general is contributing to (or even is the main cause of) the unusually large sea ice melt this past summer.
It’s all of that oil drilling, dontcha know. Sticking those little probes into the Earth and upsetting the balance of the underworld. We’re naughty, naughty creatures!
