Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

That’s incredibly stupid.
Same storm I saw them through the glass on Mobile Bay.
Oh man...I’d forgotten about the silence. And it was hot, too. No AC, no fan. Just...hot.
Per the weather channel, 40% of Galveston is riding out the storm.
Is the bridge closed? I cannot believe this many people are there. We live in DFW and have thousands of visitors.
Turn down the temps on the Refrigerator and Freezer in anticipation of lost power. It will help them stay cold longer. Simple and easy, should have been obvious.
We have already loaded them up with all the water jugs that will fit to have as much ice as possible if the power does go out. It won't last for days but it will help in a relatively short outage.
full sheets of 5/8” plywood have flown around our neighborhood in tropical storm force winds.
I hope your neighbor’s are secure!
Like this . . . Hey Xena, can you add Alexis to your ping list?
We forgot gin ............. and rum........
I see .. if they’re not leaping
into your lap or hiding under
a bed, hopefully it’s not so crazy.
Prayers for safety for all of yall. May this time tomorrow, we all be back here with nothing more serious than laughing at Geraldo :’)
The water was at 9ft at the 5PM discussion ... the bridge starts under water at 10ft.
If you decide to haul freight out of Houston in the coming days...be aware of the gas shortages that may occur along the way.
Be safe, ole FRiend.
