Hurricane Ike Live Thread III
NOAA/NHC ^ | 12 September 2008 | NOAA/NHC

Posted on 09/12/2008 5:12:09 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.

The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

My parents lost water during Hugo because the city pumps didnt work when the power went off. They were fortunate because they live very near the city pumping station, so they were among the first to get electricity back...my uncles and their families ended up coming to my parents' house to shower, etc., and one also brought his freezer over to plug in, because they didn't get power back for some time.

Is the bridge closed? I cannot believe this many people are there. We live in DFW and have thousands of visitors.

I heard a suggestion I had not heard before.

Turn down the temps on the Refrigerator and Freezer in anticipation of lost power. It will help them stay cold longer. Simple and easy, should have been obvious.

We have already loaded them up with all the water jugs that will fit to have as much ice as possible if the power does go out. It won't last for days but it will help in a relatively short outage.

Hey Ditter! Yes, the fury of Mother Nature can be exciting albeit we appreciate the consequences.

If you decide to haul freight out of Houston in the coming days...be aware of the gas shortages that may occur along the way.

Be safe, ole FRiend.
