Large and dangerous Hurricane Ike approaching the Upper Texas coast. Mandatory evacuations began in earnest Thursday as an estimated one million coastal residents headed inland. There were widespread reports of gas stations running out of fuel.
The National Weather Service posted dire storm surge predictions of 20-25 ft storm surge along the coast and bay heads. Hurricane warnings covered a 400 mile swath of the Gulf of Mexico.
Wholesale gasoline prices spiked 30 percent Thursday, or nearly $1 a gallon, out of fear of what Ike might do.

I know ... creepy.
We are doing the same thing with the A/C. We are wearing winter clothes, but if the power goes out we will at least be comfortable for a few hours. ;-)
I’ve got a minimum of midget chow.
I’m trying to teach the little twit to eat leaves and grass clippings and such.
Midgets is hard to train.
Ping to hurricane thread.
I don't know, I worked for a window factory, I'ld probably take taped up glass hitting me over non taped up glass no matter what type of glass it was, Tempered doesn't cut as bad but regular glass will cut the hell out of you, especially if its flying around. What would be hell is a big glass panel being blown in and hitting you like a patio door, with 100 mph winds it would probably crush you. But then again if it was getting that bad out side the house, the house would of probably been blown apart by then.
I am 68 years old and still doing what momma said.
YEah, I’m pretty concerned about that. It looked pretty half assed. Still, using the ground to support the weight of the boards looks like a good idea to me. Plus, it would save me drilling in my siding, assuming it survives.
There’s a thread up on FR now too...what a mess..
Terrible news, but thankfully, my family is East of Houma..a tad over 45 miles & safe!
Oh - and that’s ignoring the waves...
I’m with you. It’s scary - the wind, the rain. My biggest fear during Fran in Raleigh was falling trees. And driving around the next day, I saw so many homes and cars damaged by them. Terrible stuff.
My sis and her 4 kids live in Pearland, TX. Just south of Houston. They took off for Dallas last night. Her husband’s in China on business, but his company found hotel rooms for the family and pets. Fingers crossed their home stays safe and sound. Ditto for all the other citizens in its path!
If you haven’t already please add me to the ping list. Thx.
I’d like to be on the ping-list too, please.
I'm a wreck, I'm considering self medicating (martini) and sleeping through it.
The dog has been attached at the hip for the entire day, she does NOT like this at all. Me neither for that matter.
You are way too late... some of us here were saying that at about post 500.
Please. You don’t need to repeat your dire predictions of doom every ten minutes. They are everywhere on this thread. After a while it begins to seem like you’re enjoying someone elses misery. Like you’re actually hoping for lots of death. How bout mixing in a little compassion.
This isn’t New Orleans.
