BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A white fraternity that traces its roots to the Civil War and Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee is again facing complaints over its antebellum-themed events.
This time, University of Alabama alumnae are upset after Kappa Alpha Order members wearing Confederate uniforms and carrying battle flags paraded past a historically black sorority as the women celebrated the group's 35th anniversary.
The fraternity has been forced to halt its "Old South" festivities on some campuses because of claims of racial insensitivity, and Alabama members have apologized for pausing in front of Alpha Kappa Alpha's sorority house during this year's parade.
Alpha Kappa Alpha members said there was no confrontation or taunting, but they were shocked to see fraternity members in rebel uniforms and white women from another sorority in hoop skirts.
"I don't believe these young folks were in any way trying to be racist," said Joyce Stallworth, an Alpha Kappa Alpha alumna who saw the April 29 parade in Tuscaloosa and is an associate education dean at Alabama. "But they were being insensitive. I don't think they understood the broader implications of what they were doing."
While 71 alumnae sent a petition to Alabama President Robert Witt complaining about the use of Confederate flags and uniforms on campus, administrators haven't taken any formal action against the fraternity

Aren't the "Tolerant" left wonderfull??
“Here we go again” ping.
Oops.
Here we go again ping, redux.
Good lawd....leave ‘em alone.
Ironically..........the local, LIBERAL, newspaper in my town is owned by a Kappa Alpha....and his sons were all ‘legacies’ and are currently working at the paper.
Would they have felt better if it had been a pervert parade with rainbow rags?
Could I dare say that most of Congress is insensitive? They obviously aren’t looking at The Broader Implications.......
Celebrate black history month? Gone.
Religious holidays of any/every stripe? Gone.
Any group that promotes one race, gender, creed, sexual orientation over another? Gone.
Any group that promotes "awareness" of any cause, be it breast cancer or sickle cell anemia? Gone.
After all, if you're going to quash someone's rights because someone else may find it offensive when they exercise those rights... Well, you're going to have to quash everyone's rights equally lest you be labeled discriminatory.
In other words, life will be pretty {expletive} boring around campus. Guess the kids will just to turn to sex, drinking, and drugs to entertain themselves...
As you point out, the "tolerant" left really aren't so tolerant after all.
Why should this be a concern? Do blacks gives a damn about white "sensitivity"?
Looks to me like harmless Halloween costumes for big kids but it often seems that the prevailing thought today is that every white southerner was an Ashley Wilkes, every girl a Scarlet O'Hara. The real Confederacy was ugly, rotten, dishonest and needed to be beaten for the good of all Americans of all races.
Oh please, if we'd discarded the founders from Virginia and points south, Hamiltion would have nationalized the banks and carriage makers over two centuries ago. While slavery might have been, they weren't ugly, rotten, and dishonest, it was a national failing, not far out of step with the times. From your picture I'd hang with the kids on the left any day.
I can’t believe KA is still doing this “Old South” crap.
They can’t get away from their ‘winkets’.
Lincoln in 1858, to a Chicago crowd during his race against Stephen A. Douglas for the United States Senate seat from Illinois: I leave you, hoping that the lamp of liberty will burn in your bosoms until there shall no longer be a doubt that all men are created free and equal.
Jefferson Davis in 1860, in the United States Senate in response to a speech by Senator William H. Seward: We recognize the fact of the inferiority stamped upon that race of men by the Creator, and from the cradle to the grave, our Government, as a civil institution, marks that inferiority.
Stand by for heavy seas.
A fine sentiment from Watkins who often showed a healthy disrespect for the pretensions of the day. And nothing is more pretentious today than the moonlight and magnolias model of the Confederacy. Life was fine for Ashley Wilkes, but not so much for the ordinary southerner who had to pick up the tab for the aristocracy in blood and poverty.
Oh bullsh*t. Did you miss this part of the story: "...Kappa Alpha Order members wearing Confederate uniforms and carrying battle flags paraded past a historically black sorority as the women celebrated the group's 35th anniversary." It's one thing for them to dress up in their rebel glad-rags at their own functions. But it appears that they were deliberately misusing their confederate paraphernalia in an attempt to disrupt the sorority's event. A primarily black sorority at that. They knew exactly what they were doing, and the kind of reaction they'd get. If anything it should be the SCV or one of the other 'heritage not hate' groups that should be up in arms rather that the fraternity home office.
