Bright white Jupiter beside a full moon tonight

Tonight, when the sun sets, go outside and look southeast. The full Moon is having a close encounter with Jupiter. The two are so bright, you won't even need a sky map to find them.

When the full moon rises tonight in your neck of the woods (about an half hour or so after local sunset, allowing for sufficient time for it to clear buildings or trees on your local eastern horizon), note the bright white "star-like" object nearest to it. It is the planet Jupiter, currently some 370 million miles from Earth! -ETL

Re: the planet Jupiter, currently some 370 million miles from Earth
FYI: the Moon, on average, is about 240,000 miles from Earth.

Sorry to complain, I'll be out there along with anyone else (the neighobor's kid) who wants to see this display; but:
THE MOON?
I don't remember one time, not ever in two generations, being so incapacitated as to need a sky map to find the moon.

I don't remember one time, not ever in two generations, being so incapacitated as to need a sky map to find the moon. Who said anything about a sky map? However, the Moon does go through various crescent phases in which it can be so thin at times that one WOULD need a sky map to find it. Not tonight of course. :) Hopefully the weather cooperates for most of us. If you have buildings or trees on your south-east horizon, you might have to wait until about 9 or 10 tonight to see the pair.

Actually, if buildings or trees are blocking your south-east horizon, you may have to wait until *after* 10 pm tonight for the pair to rise high enough to be viewed. It of course depends on how how much of your local SE horizon is being blocked out.

I saw Jupiter last night and it was very bright. I had to check an astronomy program to make sure that’s what it was.

Last night we had a beautiful moon rise behind scattered cumulus clouds, small ones. That followed a beautiful sunset painting larger drifting formations and the 7:30 UPS outbound flight.
The article states that the moon and Jupiter will be so bright that "you won't even need a sky map".

All I have to do is cut down a few hundred really tall trees... Or, wait until later tonight when they rise high enough to be seen through the gaps.
Or, climb to the top of one of the trees! :)

What night is this Mars thing supposed to happen?

I planned on going out in my little boat to watch the moon rise over the Ches bay. Now they have closed the Ches Bay bridge tunnel due to heavy TSTMS. I am glad I decided to stay home and watch the lightning from home.
BTW, the Mars thing is a fake.

The article states that the moon and Jupiter will be so bright that "you won't even need a sky map". Besides time and direction, sky maps also show you where a given object is in relation to the background constellations and stars.

I am so proud of myself. I posted a response to a planetary alignment post without discussing URANUS.
Where is URANUS anyway?

What night is this Mars thing supposed to happen? That's an old internet hoax that has been circulating since August 2003, when we DID in fact have a "close encounter" with Mars. The truth is we have a so-called close encounter with Mars, not every August, but every 26-27 months. This is how long it takes for Earth to catch up to Mars along its inner track (Earth orbits the Sun in the 3rd lane, Mars in the 4th). AND, it (Mars) never gets as large as the full moon as the hoax claims. In Aug, 2003, we got as close as 35 million miles. 26 months later, only 55 million. The reason we aren't always at the same distance from Mars at every close approach is that neither of our orbits are perfectly circular, but rather slight elliptical. The next close approach will be in Jan 2010.

Where is URANUS anyway? Off somewhere emitting gases I suppose. It is one of the "gas giants" of the solar system. :)
