Ida and the seamier side of paleontology (is Ida just the tip of the iceberg?)

The launch of Ida, alias Darwinius masillae, in May this year was unprecedented. It raised eyebrows across the whole range of media-savvy people. Whilst scientists have learned how to capture the interest of the media and promote their work, this particular indulgence was a shock and it was quickly recognised as hype...

Warning!
Avert your eyes.
Do not read anything beyond this point.
The Christian Taliban is out to destroy you.
They use devious methods of mind control.
You are unable to resist them.
They will control you.
Be afraid. Be very afraid!
Don't Look, Don't Read, Don't Think.

First time I noticed the liberal projection....”don’t read don’t think”...blah blah blah....
in other words keep parroting “peer review” nonsense...
and bow to the secular humanist NEA gods...
absolutely helpless!

The reference to "profit" draws attention to the purchase price of the fossil: reputed to be "a stunning $750,000". The reviewer was one of the signatories to a letter in Nature that expressed "[o]utrage at [the] high price paid for a fossil". When palaeontologists join the ranks of fossil traders, their integrity is suspect. As an Editorial in Nature said: "such arrangements introduce conflicting incentives that can all too easily undermine the process of the assessment and communication of science." It's kind of ironic that creationists should be so maligned over their creation museums because of the money they make, with this sort of thing hanging over science's head, so to speak.

The big question is whether this represents the tip of an iceberg (and there is much more of this under the surface) or whether it is exceptional. In my assessment, the Ida-team has overstepped the mark but what they have done is not that unusual. Science does not have the objectivity that the textbooks claim. That is why it is essential to have vigorous debate within science. There sure does seem to be a big difference between how science SHOULD work and how it DOES work, and sadly, some of the most adamant defenders of science don't seem to be able to distinguish between the two.

I think so too...I was just commenting about the original post by Leonard...the Christian taliban and the helpless liberal projections about “don’t think”, etc.

Interesting, isn’t it, how the first posts by evos attack Christianity instead of addressing the topic at hand?
And then the evos complain that there’s never any serious discussion about science on these threads and act like they’re not contributing to it.

It happens all the time in science. Look at the financial incentives (and pressure) to tow the line on AIDS chemo drugs, climate change “solutions”, emergency flu vaccines, etc, etc.

Let’s face it, palaeontology isn’t an exact science. Some would argue that it’s barely a science at all.

You wouldn't know science if it came up and bit you on the ass.
There is no serious discussion about science because your (pl) side doesn't know what science is. The evo side has tried discussing science, but are totally ignored or called atheistic liberals or worse.
Metmom, what is your science background? HS, a few college courses? You (pl) should know what you are talking about.
Example: GGG, who admits he has no science background goes on and on about non-coding DNA and has no idea about what he is talking about.
I don't get into the detailed discussions about what the bible says, because I haven't studied it. But I know molecular biology (graduate degrees) and your side doesn't know what they are talking about.
Don't expect a reply from me until tonight as I have to travel a lot today for work and will be gone. I am writing this right after I awoke.
