Just happened, no associated news story.
I’ve been checking the USGS earthquake site on a daily basis for years, that’s just about the most seismically active area on the planet.
I use a great little utility called EQuake3D.exe.
You can download it for free. It gives you a visual of realtime earthquake data (from the USGS) mapped to a rotatable globe.

You and me both! Living in Los Angeles,I must check for activity here locally and world wide about 20-30 times a day...
Happened at 18;19 UTC - it’s now approaching 21:00 UTC - “Just happened” might be a stretch - at least it is for me.
I only use the Mac side of my machine on the interwebs...
Keith,
Sorry.
I checked the map before my flight. Nothing.
I checked the map after my flight. Earthquake.
I did not check the time closely.
Ah. Another one of those flighty posts...
We have some missionary friends in Vanuatu. Prayers up!
Please keep us posted.
Massive earthquake in the Vanuatu area + tsunami waves of 1 meter recorded on Efate 21.08.2011
http://earthquake-report.com/2011/08/20/massive-earthquake-in-the-vanuatu-area/
A massive earthquake measuring 7.5 magnitude struck the Vanuatu area at 3:55 AM in the night. A tsunami with theoretical waves up to 1.9 meters could be expected on a Vanuatu island (see below).
That means it might cause a tsunami.
Depth: 28.5 km (17.7 miles)
For tsunamis, depth is a factor. Shallow earthquakes can cause a tsunamis. Powerful earthquakes (mag 7 or greater) are also a factor).
This is considered a shallow earthquake...
Bush’s fault.....
***Bushs fault.....***
Of course!
Do you think Zero will cancel his vacation to send relief help?
I’ve read more recently that the ni-Vanuatu people are spome of the nicest and most kind people one could ever hope to meet.
Here’s hoping for the absolute minimum of destruction and casualties.
. . . or perhaps Reagan and and both Bush’s?
spome = some
(where the heck did that ‘p’ come from?)
What if a bunch of FReepers got together and bought this place in Vanuatu?
It’s north of where the earthquake hit and a little bit south of the large island of Espiritu Santo.
Thoughts???
