Speaking at SXSW over the weekend, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez voiced her view that people shouldn't be worried that automation might be about to wipe out their jobs.
It's an unusual take, because the perceived wisdom is that rising automation will adversely impact both blue- and white-collar jobs, laying waste to factory workers, lawyers, and anyone else who does repetitive work that could easily be automated.
The thinking goes that these people will either need swift retraining or will need to survive on government handouts. Meanwhile, the moguls who actually own the robots will accumulate wealth by laying off expensive human workers in favour of cheap robot workers. Think Jeff Bezos already the world's richest man running an incredibly profitable Amazon, which is already being heavily automated by robots.

And that’s just going to piss the robots off.
That’s how it starts.
Make them pay into social security!
Do not laugh....Democrats have wanted a value-added tax for a long time. Automation gives them the ability to levy one.
You see, taxable income is still set by the market.
Profits are set by the market.
But the value added to an item by a robot is determined by a bureaucrat....hence, the ideal situation under socialism.
I have had liberals blow up at me when I suggested alternatives to universal basic income (UBI) to the robots taking all our jobs.
They said there is no other alternative to the high unemployment. I said yes, there is, reduce the labor pool.
How do you do that? Close the borders to end immigration, stop issuing visas, and deport illegal immigrants and their American born kids.
That would end the population growth, and it would reduce the labor pool by millions. Equally importantly, it stabilizes or reduces the size of the next generation.
Now you have fewer people competing for the fewer jobs that cannot be outsourced or automated. Unemployment doesn’t go up as high as it otherwise would.
If you DO have to pay unemployment, it becomes more sustainable because you aren’t paying for an increasing pool of unemployed people.
They’d end up an incentive for “shadow work”, the work they push onto customers and incentivize by making it more inconvenient if you don’t.
For example, they push people to use self-checkout by closing all but one or two manned checkout stations.

And, of course, the teller would then refuse to help me. They just sent me home to download the app.
The job description of the bank teller had become: "Convince the customers that bank tellers don't deserve to have jobs."
I’ve run into the same spiel. My answer - I have a dumb phone, so I can’t install the app.
When pressured, I either say it is due to financial constraints (I can’t afford it, I’m poor, so you have to) or cite visual issues (implying handicapped).
I don’t have severe vision problems, since I drove there, but the latter isn’t a total lie.
The financial answer isn’t incorrect. I’m not paying hundreds for a smart phone plus the more expensive data plan.
By reminding them everyone cannot just “use an app”, it forces them to remember that we cannot just abandon customer service.
And no, I’m not old or old-fashioned. However, I don’t want to risk the loss of my financial data because I’m using an app and risking data loss both from theft of my device / account info AND their IT security. I’ve already seen my husband’s identity stolen twice, neither his fault, and once in my case. I’m not going to increase the risk for THEIR convenience.
“They just sent me home to download the app.”
I don’t have a smart-phone-——they would have quite a scene on their hands if they pulled that on me.
.
The other thing is that many of those apps do not work if you try to install it on a PC.
So by what you’re saying they actually CLOSE even more small businesses with their agenda.
Shrewd but devious.

I wouldn’t try-—they give me personal service or I go elsewhere.

First make sure the robots run on Green Energy, not fossil fuels. Put lttle solar cells or windmills atop their little robot heads!
Then, $15 hr. min. wage for robots. Robots need a humane, liveable wage!
Then, 90% tax rate— but only for the richest robots! At the “tippy top”!
That seems to be a major part of the left agenda— convincing workers to vote AGAINST their own best interests.
This has turned out to be frighteningly easy.
