NJ is now the only state in the US where drivers are not allowed to pump their own gas

New Jersey drivers will now stand alone as they sit in their cars while gas is pumped for them.

That's because for the first time in 72 years, Oregon motorists will be able to grab a fuel nozzle and pump gas into their cars on their own, after a decades-old ban on self-serve gas stations was revoked. Gov. Tina Kotek signed a bill on Friday allowing people across the West Coast state to choose between having an attendant pump gas or doing it themselves. The law took effect immediately.

So now the Garden State is the only state that prohibits motorists from pumping their own gas. A few countries also ban it, including South Africa, where attendants offer to check fluid levels and clean the windshield, with tipping expected. New Jersey’s 1949 ban on self-service pumps remains a source of pride for some in a state where bumper stickers declare “Jersey Girls Don’t Pump Gas.” And since the state generally has lower gas prices than New York and Pennsylvania, many drivers from neighboring states cross the state line to fuel up.

True, I got off an exit on the Jersey turnpike to go to the bathroom a few years back. I had to avoid the mold, step over the leaks, while fighting off the bugs so my kid could piss. Most disgusting bathroom I have been in. I hoped it was just dumb luck that I used this gas station as is a one-off uncared for bathroom but it may not have been.

I was pretty surprised by the layout of the NJ gas stations. More like 1929 than 2023. Most have two beat up pumps and some dangerous looking attendants who are trying to wheedle a tip.

False reason for elevated gas prices in NJ. It’s taxes. For decades NJ gas was some of the cheapest in the US even with gas attendants being paid.

New Jersey’s 1949 ban on self-service pumps remains a source of pride for some in a state where bumper stickers declare “Jersey Girls Don’t Pump Gas.”

They pass gas and pump the crank.

Joisey gals park their bubble gum on the bedpost before giving oral, but they don't pump gas.

New Jersey and Connecticut are similar in that they are by definition very densely populated - numbers 1 and 4 in the nation respectively - yet much of the area of the two states is rural and empty.

New Jersey has vast amounts of farmlands and forests. Likewise Connecticut, especially when you get away from the seacoasts.

I'm old enough to remember when nobody pumped their own gas anywhere. You'd pull into a gas station and an attendant would come running out to you and not only pump your gas, but check your oil, clean your windshield and ask you if you needed directions (especially if you had an out of state plate).

This is because gas stations in those days gave out free folding maps of the local area to any tourist passing through. If it was a Mobil station, the maps would have all the Mobil gas stations on them. Likewise for Exxon, Shell, etc. This was a way for them to advertise their brand.

Once unfolded, no man was ever able to fold it back to the original state. It required a woman to do that. Men could read the maps but couldn't fold them. Women couldn't make heads or tails out of the maps, but got them folded up perfect for the glove compartment after the man figured out where they were going. It was good teamwork.

I get defensive about my state and I don’t apologize for it.

And you shouldn't apologize.

It's OK to come from a state where the joisey gals make the females from WV look like Rhodes Scholars.

No one questions the toughness of jersey men, they have to be tough to get along with housewives from joisey.

But you have to face the fact that every major city in NJ is a crime ridden, demonRAT shit hole and the smell that comes from newark is beyond hades.

I went to one recently in New York. Fortunately I had toilet paper in my truck because the loser that owned the place told me it was too expensive and he didn’t supply it.

I live in New Jersey and I like sitting on my ass listening to music and letting somebody else do the work. Or I go in and get something to drink.

Nobody in the history of NewJersey has ever tipped the gas pump guy and they would be shocked is somebody did.

This is not true. It has been legal for the past several years to pump your own gas in some sparsely-populated areas of Oregon. I saw this during my last visit to the state in 2017.

You make a good point.

But here on Free Republic, liberal states are constantly criticized here. Nobody is thinking about the history of how many Native sons of any state fought in wars or any of that.

On Free Republic, people are simply thinking of the liberal politics of many states today, not any issues about the history of that state.

It has been this way for a long time. Bikers like to pump their own gas, and we always filled up before entering NJ.

Were your ‘legions’ theme transfixed on todays NJ population you’d have a different set of Senators and Congressmen. As it is those today’s legions of like minded citizens are outnumbered by a population that bears no resemblance.

However in NJ you can pump your own diesel fuel. And yes, even if it’s a car. Square that?
