Priest cancels planned reading of Quran during mass

It made headlines and sparked a firestorm of controversy when the news broke last week. Now, the event has been scrapped:

A plan to allow for the reading of the Quran from the pulpit during a Mass at St. Peter Church in Charlotte June 26 has been canceled, with an interfaith dialogue planned for October instead. St. Peter Parish had agreed to take part in an event called Faith Shared, in which priests, rabbis and Muslim scholars are scheduled to read sacred texts in each other’s houses of worship. The event is a project of two groups, the Interfaith Alliance and Human Rights First.

In announcing the cancellation June 7, Jesuit Father Patrick Earl, pastor of St. Peter, noted that a 2004 Vatican document, “Redemptionis Sacramentum” (“The Sacrament of Redemption”) expressly forbids the reading of texts from other religions during the celebration of Mass. Father Earl was not aware of the Vatican prohibition when he agreed to host the event.

In a May 27 telephone interview, he told Catholic News Service he was prompted to sign on to the Faith Shared initiative after recalling things he had heard during meetings of Mecklenburg Ministries, an interfaith clergy group in the Charlotte area. “I’ve heard from Muslim imams about what they and their congregations have suffered just from the fear, the fear of what they call Islamophobia,” Father Earl said. One recent instance was related to an Islamophobia conference held in Charlotte earlier in May. “Some of the clergy coming here had trouble flying here because of the fear of some of the pilots, and so they were late getting here,” said the priest.

Evidently there are some considering the whole “sharing” thing that don’t know their scripture very well. A dangerous practice.

2 John 1:9 Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. 10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.

Why? He cancelled the event.

By the way, one excommunicates one’s self by action.

So right. Who thought that 3 ring circus up? Reading the Koran in Mass is a sacrilege. That sounds like something Father Pfleger would dream up.

yeah...we all know one excommunicates oneself by ones actions....but

Pope excommunicates seven Vietnamese
United Press International/April 7, 1983
By Philip Pullella
Pope John Paul II excommunicated Vietnamese Archbishop Peter Martin Ngo Dinh Thuc and six men he ordained as bishops because of their connection with the “antipope” in Spain, the Vatican said Thursday.

The archbishop is a brother of the late President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam, who was assassinated in November 1963.

The six “illegitimate” bishops comprised an American, a Frenchman, and four Mexicans.

A document from the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith dated March 12 said Thuc, 85, and the six men consecrated illegally by him or by his substitute had been banished from the church.

I expect somebody finally got the information to Bishop Jugis, and then ZOT.

Not sure reading the Koran, in itself, is sacrilegious. If the reading is part of the sermon (uh, “homily”) and accompanied by a lesson, it’s part of the teaching authority. But what I gather here is that the reading is added to, or substituting for, the usual selections from the Old & New Testaments. Fr. Pfleger indeed. Jokes like this empowered Bishop LeFevre.

I try to give other people the benefit of a doubt, but Father is either supremely dumb or supremely dissembling.

Personally as a Catholic I go to Mass to hear the word of God and readings from the Bible. I don’t want or need to hear from the Koran for any reason. Its just a bunch of PC BS. It needs to be nipped in the bud.

Much to probably some people’s objections, I would leave mass immediately. I would simply walk out. Not sure if some would consider it rude behavior but I personally don’t see the Koran reading as spiritual or spreading the word of God.

In general, I agree; but I’ve got to say that my initial knowledge of the evils of communism came from the pulpit, and that wasn’t even a religion! Granted, the lessons concerned the necessity of atheism as a factor. But of course this was all pre-Vatican II when sermons were far more *interesting* than they are now.

Some Catholics, along with some Christians, could use a little education on the evils of Islam. I’ve met more than a few who defend it because of its “orthodoxy” and “recognition” of Christ and Mary. That “little knowledge” is dangerous indeed and could be corrected at the altar.

Forget “rude”! It’s absolutely the right thing to do. The only problem I’ve found with walking out (which was wasn’t rare during the Vietnam war) is that you really have to find another Mass—just to keep your conscience clear.

it doesn’t say that.
it says he cancelled the event, because he didn’t know of the rule...
“with an interfaith dialogue planned for October instead.”

...the man is an ignorant idiot. instead of worrying about Muslims who “tell” him they are afraid, he SHOULD be worrying about Coptic Christians, and others, who are being KILLED by Muslims, wherever Islam is the law.

the Quran is literally the religion of the devil, not a man. ANY Christian who reads ahadith, Sira, and Quran, can easily see this. (An Angel who terrorizes and chokes a mortal? that’s what Mo himself said Gabriel did to him! Even odd things like music is “haram” (remember psalms talking about music and satan?)

...and i’m an ordinary guy. but (long story) i was INSIDE a masjid, at a regional tri-state “Dawa” meeting. i know EXACTLY what they think about these “interfaith” events.

and, they teach that ALL Christians after Mo, go to hell. Only the “Children of the Book” BEFORE him, can go to Heaven.

they teach that NO government is legitimate, unless it follows Sharia law. that Jews, apostates, and gays should be killed. and much more. in their OWN literature.
THAT is what should be read, to help people understand the very real danger.

if our own PRIESTS don’t know this (and more!), then God help us, because otherwise, our descendants will wear burkas.

AMEN!

Jesus gave them to us to be Shephards, to teach and guide us, NOT to lead us astray !!!

(How Pfleger can be allowed to preach in a Catholic Church, mystifies me.)

If anyone is OK with “interfaith dialogue” in their church, there’s really no point in attending at all. I’m fine with “inter-denominational” dialog, since many Christian denominations have their base in salvation by grace alone, and that being the only way to Heaven.

If, by “interfaith”, they mean recognizing a heathen, i.e., Muslim, “faith”, it’s blasphemy. Any Roman Catholic who thinks that this kind of “tolerance” is reasonable does not believe what true Christians believe. They’d be better off staying home to watch reruns of Andy Griffith or Three Stooges.

Of course it isn't. It is basically an outgrowth of some late gnostic gospel, with Jesus (Isa) and Mary (Marium) playing an imporant role. It does deny the Resurrection though:

[4.155] ...We made with them a firm covenant.
[4.155] Therefore, for their breaking their covenant and their disbelief in the communications of Allah and their killing the prophets wrongfully and their saying: Our hearts are covered; nay! Allah set a seal upon them owing to their unbelief, so they shall not believe except a few.
[4.156] And for their unbelief and for their having uttered against Marium a grievous calumny.
[4.157] And their saying: Surely we have killed the Messiah, Isa son of Marium, the apostle of Allah; and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so (like Isa) and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for sure.
[4.158] Nay! Allah took him up to Himself; and Allah is Mighty, Wise.
[4.159] And there is not one of the followers of the Book but most certainly believes in this before his death, and on the day of resurrection he (Isa) shall be a witness against them.

(The Women)

The Koran

It is what it is: an early medieval para-Christian piece of wisdom literature. Those who know Arabic say it is beautifully written.
