TOKYO -- Chinese President Xi Jinping's expected meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken next week signals his desire to stabilize relations with Washington as he faces economic headwinds at home. The planned reception, first reported by the Financial Times and confirmed by U.S. sources, will likely set the tone for China's new foreign policy team -- top diplomat Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Qin Gang -- as they put together their diplomacy playbook. "If President Xi meets Secretary Blinken, it will reinforce to the Chinese government that he is personally engaged in steering the relationship and that any...

Ukrainian President Volodymr Zelensky got a rousing reception before, during and after his speech to U.S. Congress, but opposition from some GOP lawmakers remains to Washington footing much of the bill for his fight against Russian President Vladimir Putin... ...sitting out most of the standing ovations that peppered his 22-minute speech were GOP Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), and Jim Jordan (R-OH), although Boebert stood while Zelensky entered the chamber. In a video after the speech, Boebert said that she would not back sending more money to Ukraine until there is a "full audit" of already approved funds,...

The Securities and Exchange Commission was seeking information from collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX earlier this year, the Prospect has confirmed, bringing a new perspective to an effort by a bipartisan group of congressmembers to slow down that investigation. The March letter from eight House members—four Democrats and four Republicans—questioned the SEC’s authority to make informal inquiries to crypto and blockchain companies, and intimated that the requests violated federal law. Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN), whom the Republican caucus just elected as majority whip, the number three position in the House GOP leadership, led the letter. In a contemporaneous Twitter thread, Emmer...

A golfer who is bidding to become the first transgender woman to earn a Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) tour card has sparked outrage online. Hailey Davidson, 29, had a strong finish in the first two rounds of the first stage of the LPGA and Epson Tour Qualifying School in Palm Springs this week. But after DailyMail.com and other outlets reported on her efforts Friday, many questioned whether Davidson's inclusion was fair. That is because athletes who undergo male puberty before transitioning are widely-believed to retain strength advantages - including how far they can hit a golf ball. The mother...

Over the last several years, Davidson College’s inhospitality to freedom of thought has caught the attention of concerned alumni. Among other concerns, a group of alumni was deeply dismayed by the campus’s lack of support of, and sometimes even hostility towards, open inquiry and free expression. In 2018, these alumni formally organized themselves into an independent alumni group named the Davidsonians for Freedom of Thought and Discourse (DFTD). DFTD “seeks to ensure that a core value of Davidson is free inquiry, not indoctrination in any ideology or political viewpoint.” Since the group’s founding, the free speech climate on campus has...

The letter was signed by Reps. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Warren Davidson (R-Ohio), among others. Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) shared the letter on Twitter, writing that Biden should “follow the Constitution and the law.” “The American people deserve to have a say before we become involved in yet another foreign conflict,” DeFazio wrote. Lawmakers wrote in the Tuesday letter that the War Powers Resolution of 1973 has been abused by previous presidents, but they noted that the act restricted Biden from not only engaging troops in battle but also launching a...

A review of the data pertaining to the accusations in the phony Steele dossier about a Trump-Russia Bank connection discovered the sources used is most likely the same source the FBI used to obtain a FISA warrant to investigate the Trump-Alfa Bank connection. This person also just happens to be a radical Hillary Clinton supporter! It’s been more than two years since the 2016 election and Americans still don’t really know the sources for the phony Steele dossier used by the FBI and DOJ to obtain FISA warrants to spy on candidate and then President Trump. This nightmare for President...

At Davidson College, the frog finally realized that it’s being slowly cooked alive. As the theory goes, if you put a frog into boiling water, it will immediately jump out, but if you put it in lukewarm water and gradually raise the heat, it will not realize what is happening until it’s too late. The parable is often used to describe a social phenomenon by which an initially unpopular agenda can be made successful through gradual and subtle manipulation of opinions and language, without the populace being aware of what is happening. It appears that the Davidson College administration cranked...

Davidson College has an impressive academic reputation. It has a student-faculty ratio of 10:1. Nearly 90 percent of its courses have fewer than 30 students each. Its six-year graduation rate is 91 percent. And it has matriculated 23 Rhodes Scholars. It also has one of the worst track records for free speech in North Carolina. The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education has labeled Davidson a “red light” institution for its campus policies that “clearly and substantially restrict” student and faculty speech. That’s despite the school’s assertion that it is a “community founded on trust as articulated by the Honor...

Pete Davidson deleted his Instagram account after he wrote that he doesn't "want to be on this Earth anymore" in a post on Saturday. "I really don't want to be on this earth anymore. I'm doing my best to stay here for you but i actually don't know how much longer i can last. all i've ever tried to do was help people," Davidson wrote. An outpouring of support followed the post as "Pete Davidson" and "Pete" trended on Twitter on Saturday. On Saturday afternoon New York police told The Hollywood Reporter, "We are aware of the post and we...

President Trump's scheduled trip to a Harley-Davidson factory in Milwaukee on Thursday has been canceled over the likelihood of protests, CNN reported Tuesday. An administration official told the news network that the plans were scrapped after the motorcycle giant became uncomfortable with the threat of demonstrations. Over the weekend, massive protests broke out at airports across the country after Trump signed an executive order on Friday banning citizens of certain Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S. Other large protests were planned for the president's Milwaukee visit, according to CNN. Trump was originally supposed to head to the factory for a...

Standing in former Speaker John Boehner’s empty and cavernous Longworth office, Ohio’s newest congressman seems out of place. Maybe that’s because Warren Davidson is more of a business and military man than a politician. Before being sworn in last week, Davidson made a career parachuting from airplanes as an Army Ranger, then filing patents as a manufacturing entrepreneur. Other than a short stint as a township trustee, he’s never held elected office until now. But what Davidson lacks in political acumen, he’s confident he can replace with leadership experience. His operating doctrine is simple, he tells The Daily Signal: “Fight...

It was one of the tea party’s few highlights in Tuesday’s congressional primaries. But laying claim to former GOP House speaker John Boehner’s old seat (in all likelihood) is a big one, both for the bragging rights and the momentum it gives House conservatives in their ongoing fight to purify their party ideologically. Warren Davidson, a businessman and former Army Ranger, won a 15-way Republican primary Tuesday in the special election for Ohio’s 8th Congressional District. The tea party candidate rather easily bested more moderate candidates, including two state lawmakers, in a campaign that quickly became ground zero for the...

In regard to widespread disdain for the Middle Ages, C. S. Lewis felt that many modern people suffer from a kind of “chronological snobbery” and that “the modern conception of Progress ... is simply a myth, supported by no evidence whatever.” Certainly many minds smugly assume our world’s moral superiority to that of people in the past. That assumption merits some close critical scrutiny. This claim probably does not rest on an improvement in the numbers of deaths in war and genocide. Many millions died in past atrocities such as the Mongol invasions of Asia and Europe and the Muslim...

DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Davidson College is giving Chick-fil-A the boot. The school is suspending the restaurant chain from serving meals at student events. The union board will decide early in the semester whether or not to permanently ban the chain from campus. The suspension came after the chain's president sparked a national debate by speaking out against same-sex marriage.

KNOXVILLE — A judge said today he has no authority to make public the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation's file on former judge Richard Baumgartner. "This court has no authority whatsoever to decide on its own, 'I'm going to let the public see this file,'" Special Judge John Kerry Blackwood said at a specially-called hearing in Knox County Criminal Court. Blackwood said the portions of the file not made public contain phone records and recorded conversations in which Baumgartner discusses sex with two women and makes "crude remarks" about people. "What you're not going to find (in the TBI file) is...
