The White House says the changes could save $214 billion over a decade. “The Budget proposes to combine the traditional retail-based SNAP electronic benefit with the direct provision of nutritious and 100 percent American-grown USDA Foods to participating households. This cost-effective proposal maintains our commitment to helping needy families avoid hunger while generating substantial savings,” the budget said. Households receiving $90 per month or more would get a portion in shelf-stable milk, ready to eat cereals, pasta, peanut butter, beans and canned fruit, vegetables, and meat, poultry or fish. The remainder of the benefit would go onto the debit card...

A study by a research team from the University of Pennsylvania found that eating fish at least once a week can raise children’s IQ by nearly 5 points in the Wechsler Intelligence Scale. The study was conducted last month among 541 Chinese children between the ages of 9 and 11. The children answered questionnaires about how often they had eaten fish in the past four weeks and the options ranged from “never” to “at least once a week.” The findings showed that those who eat fish once a week scored 4.8 points higher on the IQ test than those who...

The Olsen Fish Company has been providing traditional Scandinavian foods for well over 100 years. This is still a common practice in Norway and even parts of Africa. “Basically take the head off, cut the guts and tie the tail...

San Jose residents are being asked to keep an eye out for people setting illegal fish traps in local waterways after city workers and South Bay Clean Creeks Coalition volunteers recently broke up several found in the Guadalupe River. The traps were discovered about two weeks ago under the Julian Street bridge and farther south near Virginia and Willow streets. The fish traps are built out of large items like river rock, which block the stream so fish become penned into a shallow pool of water away from their migratory path. That makes it easy for poachers to nab the...

Each year between February and June, the fish gather to spawn in Mexico's Colorado River Delta. The fish, a type of croaker called the Gulf corvina, meet in water as cloudy as chocolate milk. It's a reunion for the entire species, all members of which reproduce within a dozen-mile stretch of the delta. When the time is right, a few days before the new or full moons, the male fish begin to sing. To humans, the sound is machine guns going off just below the waterline. To female fish, the rapid burr-burr-burr is a Bing Crosby croon. Make that Bing...

Up to 1,000 non-native fish died in the Lower Santa Cruz River, a retired fish biologist says, because a state contractor diverted river water for an Ina Road bridge construction project. The diversion moved the river’s treated sewage effluent from the west bank to the east bank, away from the towering, shady willow trees along the west bank. It ended Friday, a little more than a week after it started, when the contractor dug a new channel near the bridge site to reverse the effluent’s course back to the west bank. The diversion “was a necessary part of the construction,”...

The Feast of the Seven Fishes is an Italian-American tradition to ring in Christmas Eve, when Roman Catholics celebrate the midnight birth of Jesus, known in Italian as "La Viglia." Fish is a traditional ingredient in the Christmas Eve dinner because custom calls for the eschewing of red meat leading up to the holiday. The Culinary Institute of America has provided a recipe to celebrate this tradition. For a holiday so widely celebrated, the traditions surrounding Christmas are as unique as the ornaments that decorate your tree. From decor, songs, stories and gifts, Christmas looks a little bit different in...

President Trump and Japan Prime Minister Abe carried on a tradition of feeding carp at a Koi pond in Tokyo when CNN and the mainstream media decided to twist the narrative to make Trump appear like a buffoon. CNN ran the headline, “Trump feeds fish, winds up pouring entire box of food into Koi pond,” with a misleading tweet from reporter Veronica Rocha only showing Trump dumping the entire box of food. Her footage is conveniently edited to skip Abe doing the same thing. Abe dumped his entire box into the pond and Trump followed while the Prime Minister smiled....

A proposed Constitutional amendment to “Establish the Right to Hunt and Fish” drew angry testimony from the anti-hunting and anti-trapping crowd. “This bill is barbaric,” testified John Glowa of China, who called LD 11 “the worst piece of legislation I have seen in more than twenty years of coming before this committee, and I have seen some bad ones.” Glowa also called the bill “the poison fruit of the paranoia seed planted by the out-of-state gun lobby and by radical extremist consumptive users.” And yes, that was way over the top. Katie Hansberry of the Humane Society of the United...

The mysterious world of gut bacteria is a hot area of research in science right now. The systemic implications of our gut flora are being found to have vast holistic effects from potentially affecting the symptoms of autism to influencing neurodegeneration in the brain. New research on the turquoise killfish could point to another effect of our gut microbiome – moderating aging. Several studies in recent years have found interesting links between aging and gut microbiota. From mice to men we've seen evidence of age-related differences in the microbiome between the old and young. It seems increasingly clear that as...

or the last few days, a petition to “stop Israeli apartheid” at the Dead Sea has been circulating. And while many rightly smelt something fishy about it, others floundered as they fell for the hoax, hook, line and sinker. On March 29, a guy named Ian Brown in the United Kingdom started a Change.org petition titled, “Stop Israeli apartheid against Dead Sea fishermen – make Israel give them a fair deal.” The petition says the following Since Israel took control of the West Bank in 1967: It has not issued a single fishing permit to Palestinian fishermen for fishing in...

A volatile buildup of weapons and resentment along the northern Somali coast culminated in the hijack of an oil freighter this week, the first such seizure by Somali pirates since 2012, experts and locals told Reuters on Wednesday. Gunmen hijacked the Aris 13, a small oil tanker, on Monday and are demanding a ransom to release the ship and its eight Sri Lankan crew, the EU Naval Force that patrols the waters off Somalia said. Now shipping companies are scrambling to find out whether the attack is a one-off, or whether pirates could once again threaten one of the world's...

A coalition of commercial fishing groups filed a lawsuit on Tuesday to challenge the creation of a national monument off the coast of New England. President Barack Obama created the monument in September using executive authority under the Antiquities Act. The monument is called the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, and it is made up of nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains. The creation of the monument closed the area to most commercial fishing and has been opposed by fishing groups for months. A coalition of the groups filed their lawsuit Tuesday in federal court....

Faced with the threat that Asian carp could enter the Great Lakes, Michigan is turning to the public for new ideas and plans to offer a prize to whoever comes up with a way to stop the voracious fish. Michigan's global search challenge comes after the U.S. government and others have spent hundreds of millions searching for a solution to stop the carp from entering the world's largest freshwater system. If they aren't stopped, officials fear the aggressive fish will crowd out prize native fish and hamper recreational boating in large sections of the lakes...

The peninsula's tiny islets are well-suited to nesting and have sardines and anchovies close to the shoreline. The flightless birds come on shore in September and October and stay while the males and females take turns caring for their eggs and hunting for food. The warm-weather birds breed in large colonies in southern Argentina and Chile and migrate north as far as southwestern Brazil between March and September.

Radiation inside one of the damaged reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power facility has reached an “unimaginable” level according to experts. Because so much nuclear material from Fukushima escaped into the Pacific Ocean, there are many scientists that believe that it was the worst environmental disaster in human history, but most people in the general population seem to think that since the mainstream media really doesn’t talk about it anymore that everything must be under control. Unfortunately, that is not true at all. In fact, PBS reported just last year that “it is incorrect to say that Fukushima is under...
