I have an important announcement of interest to long-time FReepers: FReeper GladesGuru, ecologist, and private property advocate, has died from complications due to prostate cancer. He was 75. Jan (pronounced “Yanâ€) Jacobson was a man of acerbic wit who could cut to the bottom line with a merciless precision. Pity the bureaucrat or academic peddling questionable “facts†under his scrutiny. His passion was wildlife biology and its relation to habitat. For over thirty years, he was Director of the Everglades Institute, a private parcel within the Big Cypress National Preserve, immediately adjacent to Everglades National Park. The parcel is unusual...

Everyone I meet down the Pub thinks I'm some brilliant businessman forging and empire. They see me engaged in my work, deep in thought and driving ahead. They comment, your the guy who always works. The chick bartenders whisper they wish their husbands we 1/2 as ambitious. They know what I want, pour before I ask and are happy to be part of my insane drive. They just don't realize I'm Freepin' ...and yes it takes immense concentration and a great sense of humor. Love FreeRepublic! Class of '98.

Remember a month or two ago, when the Democrat party leaders all woke up one morning and started in with that fake news chorus, something to the effect of “Trump is about to fire Mueller, and boy oh boy, if he does, well, then that’s obstruction, we’ll impeach him!”? They were all saying the same thing as if they had received their fake news marching orders from the DNC. This just sounds like a rehashing of that same fake news meme - but a month late. The original strategy was, if they couldn’t actually get Trump on collusion, the next...

I have a question to FReepers out there, and also the Moderators. I was recently suspended from posting for several days, TWICE for the reason that I was posting the article of authors who are banned from this site. Being suspended means you cannot even send a message to the moderator, so I was unable to ask for clarification. Had I been allowed to send a message, I would at least know the name of the author whose article was not welcome. I learned that the article of one such writer -- C. Edmund Wright ( who used to be a...

Often Freepers try the search function and miss that the article has previously posted. Here is a trick to help find previously posted items: 1. Use only one word from the title, not the whole title. Sometimes titles are abbreviated or the different sources run the same article using slightly different titles. An exact title search will not, in such cases find the previously posted articles. So, pick only the most important word. 2. Under the search bar, there is a pull-down menu. Use this to select "title" for your search rather than the standard keyword search. The difference in...

It's an anniversary of sorts -- and should be something of a national holiday. Twenty years ago, Jim Robinson became FReeper #1 on this website, and we all are much the better for it. I found FreeRepublic.com via my news aggregator at the time, The Drudge Report. Quickly I lost interest in that site in favor of this my new home page. I found that Freerepublic is just not a news aggregator, but an intelligence aggregator. Thanks to the overwhelming diversity of interests amongst the FReeper community, we can go from the smallest subatomic particles to the vastness of inter-gallactic...

It has been one hell of a year for us Freepers, for those who go way back it has been 2 decades of political drama, both horrifying and amazingly good. Over all I think most of us are grateful for the last year, I know it has been one of my best in quite a while. So this black Friday make a donation to Freerepublic, for Christmas let's get this over with, so Jim can worry about fighting the hackers, keeping the code cool and enjoying the holidays. If we make it big we could even take care of next...

Today years of home schooling and teaching honor, duty and love for country came to fruition. My two oldest sons Marshall (19) and Mitchell (18) left for MCRD San Diego. These are two fine young Christian men who have never gave their mother or I any real trouble or grief. They have never so much as back talked us. It was a proud moment for us as we watched them take the oath to protect the Constitution of the United States. Neither of them were looking for a career they just wanted to do what they felt was a duty...

Dennis F. has passed. I don't anything else yet but I'm sure he's appreciate the thoughts of those of us who knew him. Let's stay on-topic, shall we ... as he's have wished, I'm sure.

<p>The illiberal progressives are trying to knock us offline. We're fighting the good fight and will not succumb. I'm sniping the most annoying ones by hand, then two more show up to replace him. Going to experiment with an automated system to nuke 'em. SkyNet lives.</p>

After many threads expressing frustration and dismay over Free Republic's responsiveness of recent days, I think it is worth observing that FR is today responding in a manner equal to or better than the best I've ever seen during the nearly twenty years it has been my favorite website. Congratulations, and Many Thanks, to Jim, John, and the rest of the management team of Free Republic, the best website on the internet.

<p>I explained it nice as I could on my former blog. It doesn't work. We share this world, we all need to work together and come together and learn to love one another.</p>
<p>We were wrong.</p>

Wanted to avoid running a thread on this, but seeing as how it continues dragging on, guess I'd better. The DOS attacker obviously knows by now that he's hurting us. Have no idea when he/they started the attack, but we discovered it a few days ago. And John has been fighting it ever since. Says it's like whack-a-mole. Every time John gets him blocked or knocked out, he pops up again with a new modified attack. John thought he had a good solution a couple days ago, and we did enjoy one night and most of the next day with...

Pardon our dust, system improvements in process. John is making some fairly significant changes to our operating system tonight in an effort to tighten up security and possibly iron out some of the snags that have been slowing us down. So far, so good, but have encountered a few 404 errors on pings and mail, etc. But a reload brought up the pages and John says he should have that worked out soon. Light load tonight. The real test will be tomorrow during the heat of the battle.
