Tonight, my wife and I attended the Candlelight Processional at Disneyland, a yearly tradition at the park that dates back to the days when Walt was still with us. Gary Sinise, best known for playing Lt. Dan, who lost his legs fighting in Vietnam in “Forrest Gump,” this week returned to South Carolina’s Lowcountry, where much of the 1994 film was shot. The patriotic actor was there for the second annual Lt. Dan Weekend, a gathering of military personnel and veterans who were severely wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq.

There’s a memorial in Brooklyn that honors all the first responders that were killed on Sept. 11 called the Brooklyn Wall of Remembrance. There are 417 faces of first responders that were lost that day. Back in 2006, they had completed about one-third of that memorial and they ran out of money. A firefighter friend of mine took me out to see it and I offered to try and help them raise the additional money to complete the memorial. Actor Gary Sinise, who played Lt. Dan in the movie "Forrest Gump," usually takes his Lt. Dan Band to play for stateside troops while he's shooting his current TV series "CSI." But Sinise was able to get away recently to play for troops at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan. "Purple Haze," "Smooth" and "Sweet Home Alabama" electrified the crowd in the USO show.

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the GI Film Festival at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. The Festival took place in one day and showed films that portray American enlisted men and women in a favorable light as opposed to the usual Hollywood fare. This festival was an offshoot of the main GI Film Festival which takes place in May every year in Washington D.C. The main event lasts seven days and includes showings of approximately 50 films.
