Should you get ready to bundle up for more weeks or winter or be excited for an early spring? Georgia's famous groundhog General Beauregard "Beau" Lee has made his big weather forecast for 2023. Thursday morning, officials at the Dauset Trails Nature Center announced the groundhog did not see his shadow - meaning we're going to have an early spring. Lee's prediction contradicts his fellow groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, who announced that there would be six more weeks of winter.

My favorite movie is Groundhog Day, and I have made it a personal tradition to watch it on... Groundhog Day, much to my wife's chagrin. This post is in honor of that tradition: It’s Groundhog Day 2023 and here are 17 of the best quotes from the iconic 1993 movie to celebrate the holiday. Occurring every year on February 2, Groundhog Day is a popular North American superstition that revolves around an animal called a groundhog. If the rodent emerges from its burrow and sees its shadow due to sunny weather, it will retreat back to its den and winter...

On a cold Tuesday, lifelong Florida resident Amanda Brody traveled to Punxsutawney, but not to take part in Groundhog Day festivities. She and 10 others arrived a day early to protest “the abuse of live animals.” Brody, 29, is a senior campaigner for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She travels the country, organizing and leading protests against animal abuse. It’s a full-time job and “my career and passion,” she said in a telephone interview from her home in West Palm Beach. She’s signed on with PETA four years ago — one year after she became a vegan and...

Will Punxsutawney Phil predicts six more weeks of impeachment? The plump Groundhog's wacky weather prediction always falls on February 2. In the Northern Hemisphere, this date traditionally marks the midpoint between the winter solstice in December and the spring equinox in March. Today February 2, the people of our nation (at least a few of us) will watch with bated breath as Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his burrow. It’s said that if Phil encounters his shadow, we’ll be in for six more weeks of winter weather, but if he doesn’t, then spring is just around the corner. So which will...

Sunday, February 2, marks a unique calendar date, as it forms a palindromic day — one that is written the same both backward and forward. But this Sunday is more special than post palindromic days. In this case, the date rendered as it normally is in the United States — as month/day/year — is identical read both normally and reversed: 02/02/2020. However, in the numerous countries that follow a day/month/year format, the date is still the same either way. And in the many Asian countries that place the year first, it is still identical backward and forward. So whether you're...

Punxsutawney Phil undergoes “great stress” every year on Groundhog Day and should be replaced by a robot, the leader of PETA says. Ingrid Newkirk writes in a letter to the furry celebrity’s Groundhog Club that Phil deserves a break and should be allowed to retire. The request, posted on PETA’s website, comes ahead of Sunday’s annual ceremony which will determine whether spring arrives early this year. If Phil sees his shadow this weekend in the small Pennsylvania town, he will retreat and winter will continue for six weeks. If Phil does not see his shadow, spring will be here soon....

Who doesn’t love groundhog day? Groundhog Day is based on the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog (AKA woodchuck, rodent, garden destroyer) emerges from its burrow on February 2 and sees its shadow because the sun is shining, it will retreat to its den and winter will continue for (at least) six more weeks. Alternatively, if it’s cloudy and the little bugger doesn’t see its shadow, spring will arrive early. While studies have found no consistent correlation between groundhog shadows and the subsequent arrival of spring-like weather, faith in its predictive value persists, just like the belief in cow...

Did you think Groundhog Day only comes in February? For anti-insecticide zealots and others in the environmentalist movement who’ve been preoccupied for years with bees and “colony collapse disorder,†it actually comes every June.  That’s when the Bee Informed Partnership – a University of Maryland-based project supported by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) – releases the results of its annual survey of honeybee colony losses and health. In Bill Murray’s 1993 “Groundhog Day†movie, cynical TV weatherman Phil Connors is condemned to relive the same day over and over in a little Pennsylvania town until he learns the right “life lessons.â€...

"Even if this story were made up from start to finish, even if there had been no Panfilov, even if there had been nothing at all,"... "this is a sacred legend, which simply cannot be touched. And those who do so are washed-up scumbags." Russia's culture minister has revealed historical records that he claims prove the authenticity of a World War II legend largely debunked by historians, delivering the latest salvo in a long-running dispute that challenges the official narrative of the Soviet Union's war experience. Commonly referred to as "Panfilov's 28 men," the legend is among the most controversial...

Director Harold Ramis, in the DVD commentary, opined that it takes Murray's character about ten years of repeating Groundhog Day and then later, in response to several sites online linking to an article that came to an answer of just 8 years, 8 months, and 16 days, he offered the following: "I think the 10-year estimate is too short. It takes at least 10 years to get good at anything, and allotting for the down time and misguided years he spent, it had to be more like 30 or 40 years…" Here's an amazingly detailed subsequent analysis that concluded it...

The last time de Blasio held the groundhog was at the Island's 2014 Groundhog Day ceremony. He dropped the animal after the handler placed the it in his arms. The groundhog, a female stand-in named Charlotte, died several days later. But the Staten Island Zoo said it was unlikely the groundhog's death was related to being dropped.
