In powering his home, Al Gore still greatly outpaces most Americans in energy consumption. The findings were shocking: • The past year, Gore's home energy use averaged 19,241 kilowatt hours (kWh) every month, compared to the U.S. household average of 901 kWh per month. • Gore guzzles more electricity in one year than the average American family uses in 21 years. • In September of 2016, Gore's home consumed 30,993 kWh in just one month – as much energy as a typical American family burns in 34 months. • During the last 12 months, Gore devoured 66,159 kWh of electricity...

Grammy-winning producer Emilio Estefan is not happy with Donald Trump’s anti-Mexican rhetoric — and he’s gathering some friends to take a stand against it, according to Billboard.com. Billboard reports that Estefan, 62, has enlisted dozens of friends — including Shakira, Carlos Santana, Thalia, Pepe Aguilar and his wife, singer Gloria Estefan — record We’re All Mexican, which he describes as a musical “celebration of Hispanics and our accomplishments.” The track will also include reggaeton singer Wisin, Wyclef Jean, radio personality Enrique Santos and famed Spanish-American chef José Andrés, and will be released in late September. “There’s a message being sent...

If left-leaning publications value diversity, why don't they have any?On the staff of The American Prospect, I’m the only member of an ethnic minority. That's not because I bring all the variety the magazine needs, or because the editors don't think diversity is valuable. Everyone on the masthead of this liberal publication is committed to being inclusive—not just of racial and ethnic minorities but of women; gays, lesbians, and transgender people; and the poor. Nearly 40 percent of the country is non-white and/or Hispanic, but the number of minorities at the outlets included in this article's tally—most of them self-identified...

Ivy League schools usually cloak their jealousies in politesse, but President Obama’s decision to give the commencement speech at Barnard, and not Columbia, his alma mater across the street, has unleashed online exchanges as nasty as any hair-pulling, eye-gouging schoolyard brawl.

Right-wing darling Sarah Palin accused US President Barack Obama on Sunday of being lax in his response to the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster and suggested this was because he is too close to Big Oil. The former vice presidential candidate and Alaska governor, who champions off-shore drilling, criticized the media for not drawing the link between Obama and Big Oil and said if this spill had happened under former Republican president George W. Bush the scrutiny would have been far tougher. "I don’t know why the question isn’t asked by the mainstream media and by others if there’s any...

A recent front page of The New York Times featured an article entitled "Drug chieftains tied to Taliban are US targets - Shift in Afghan policy." It stated that: "Fifty Afghans believed to be drug traffickers with ties to the Taliban have been placed on a Pentagon target list to be captured or killed... and that major traffickers with proven links to the insurgency have been put on the 'joint integrated prioritized target list.' That means they have been given the same target status as insurgent leaders, and can be captured or killed at any time." According to this newly...

After relentlessly criticizing the U.S. military, anti-war agitators like to assuage their guilty consciences and convince themselves that they are patriots by repeating empty slogans about opposing the war, not the warrior. Then they promptly resume bashing the cause for which those warriors risk their lives.

After more than three hours spent grilling their staff, and incurring the wrath of one of Arlington’s most prominent employers in the process, a divided County Board last week approved plans to spend $140,000 for a new “pavilion” for day laborers to gather in Shirlington. The 4-1 vote means the new facility will be located at South Shirlington Road and 27th Street South, approximately two blocks south of the more informal gathering spot that has existed for years. Board members had to move on the issue, because the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority is preparing to renovate the W&OD Trail...

Forgive this "vanity" post. I have seen pictures of peace activists with Arafat in his office. I have heard about them confronting Israeli soldiers, but I have not heard one word about them going to coffee shops, hotels, and stores and, other places that suicide bombers target in Israel, to "stop" the "cycle of violence." Could someone tell me, are they cowards? Or do they know that the Israelis do everything possible to avoid innocent bloodshed, while the Arafat terrorists seek it out. Do these peace activists realize that they are supporting the very people who envy what bin Laden's...
