U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended his top deputy Thursday after a handful of congressional Republicans moved this week to impeach him. Speaking in Boston, Sessions said he has the "highest confidence" in Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and described him as "highly capable" when asked about the impeachment effort. A group of 11 House conservatives on Wednesday introduced articles of impeachment against Rosenstein, who oversees special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation because Sessions has recused himself.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions fiercely defended his deputy Rod Rosenstein on Thursday morning after a group of House conservatives introduced an impeachment resolution against him. “My deputy, Rod Rosenstein, is highly capable,” Sessions said at an event in Boston when asked to address the impeachment efforts. “I have the highest confidence in him. You probably know that not only did he go to the Wharton School of Business, but he graduated from Harvard right here in this area.”

The long-awaited showdown between the Justice Department and Congress is finally here. It started late Friday afternoon. While the rest of the country was parsing the just-released report on the FBI from the Justice Department’s inspector general, senior congressional leaders and selected committee chairmen quietly met with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein at a secure location in the basement of the Capitol. At issue was Justice and FBI’s continuing defiance of congressional subpoenas. At the top of this list is the demand from the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence for documents about why and...

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein’s reaction to reports of possible impeachment for failing to respond to congressional subpoenas was to proclaim that the Justice Department “will not be extorted.” I suppose he meant to say, “Only we here at the Justice Department do the extorting, with special counsels, daylight raids of people’s attorneys, bankrupting people with legal fees, threats to prosecute family members, and questionable wiretapping of Americans.” Now, quite stunningly, Rosenstein, who has been behind Justice Department stonewalling of Congress for months, dares threaten even Congress for merely carrying out its fully protected duty. Talk about thin-skinned. We need...

Former US attorney Preet Bharara applauded Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein for his response to reports that some members of the House Freedom Caucus were moving to seek his impeachment as a last resort to hamstring the Russia investigation. Rosenstein slapped down that threat on Tuesday during a discussion with reporters, saying "The Department of Justice is not going to be extorted." The deputy attorney general oversees the Russia probe being led by special counsel Robert Mueller. Preet Bharara, a former US attorney and an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, applauded Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's response to news...
