"OK I'll do my part. Setting my thermostat for 65. Trying to remember if I left the belt sander and the table saw running before I left this morning. Maybe I'll go home at lunch at catch up on the overdue arc-welding chores I've been putting off. "

LOL. My dishes didn't come clean in the washer after three consecutive runs. I guess I'll try again. Same for the washer and dryer--I don't think it's the soap. Darn, now that you mentioned it, I think I left the house with the fridge door propped open--that should help keep a cool house though, unlike you, you selfish nonconserving one, I have the thermostat set at 66...

It's all Enron's fault.

The alert was issued yesterday, and isn't in effect for today, so I can't really speculate how close it was. But that green line represents what California has the right to use today from all sources, and there's plenty now, for some reason.

That's funny, I just check the Cal ISO website and there are no warnings.

If I put on my cynic hat, there could be three different sets of reasons for this level of alert.

First, this could be a prudent response to a lot of bad things happening and asking power system operators to not do anything that could remove more generation or transmission from the systems. After all....Thursday's warning came as a heat wave swept through Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. Two large nuclear power plants in California, Diablo Canyon and San Onofre, were closed for routine maintenance. There also was a disruption in a north-south transmission line, said ISO spokesman Gregg Fishman.

On a second perspective, California could be nervious anytime they get close to load resource balance as somebody, say BC Hdyro, could watch and then pull the plug on them. There are lots of organizations that would enjoy watching Cal-ISO go down. California may not want to be close enough to the ragged edge of service that they are beholding to any one entity that they have mistreated in the past.

On a Third level, the Davis Administration may feel that blackouts are its equivalent to the Bush Administration war on terrorism. That is the the California public may rally around the Governor in a time of obvious crisis and that Davis may be able to improve his standing with the public if he helps people through a time of crisis.

After having gotten the three alternatives off my chest, I vote for item 1 and a hmmmm for item 2 (possible but not probable).

The third is not impossible with all the items coming out on Davis!

You are right. I agree that the third is not impossible. Someone said they expect to see lots of such alerts. If there are lots of alerts, the third might be worth discussing in greater depth.

Wouldn't too many dubious alerts be risky if Davis was attempting to use them to political advantage? The result could be the old "boy cried wolf" scenario. People quickly turn a deaf ear to alerts when nothing substantial ever materializes. Then it's impossible to really get their attention when the alert absolutely has to be heeded.

It will be interesting to see what length Davis goes to in this, an election year, to keep the lights on during the sure to come heat waves.

The power brokers are no doubt salivating at the prospect of taking CA to the bank this summer. They'll have leverage like they've never had before.

On a related subject, I was just vacationing in the vicinity of the Glen Canyon and Hoover dams. Both Lake Powell and Lake Mead are 50+ feet below normal. I was told that the low water levels are due to persistent drought conditions combined with excessive releases of water to produce power for CA in the past couple of years. Do you know how much lower these lakes will be permitted to go down or doesn't it really matter? Will they just keep letting the water out as long as they can make a good profit on it?

What is interesting is that the PNW has more snow pack than you can imagine yet some reservoirs are not full, because of fish flush to get young fry out to see and the snow not yet melting.

In other parts of the US, there is a real serious drought that is still continuing.

Your reservoir being 50 plus feet low could be no big deal or it could be a big deal depending on if you drainage basin winter snow has melted yet or not.

Davis is either going to get re-elected or he is not.

After that huge logical statement I really should follow up. If Simon is elected he will face a monumental clean up task and, unless there is a substantial change in the legislature (which dosen't seem likely), the RATS are going to pile on Simon for not solving the problems he had promised, while voting against all legislation that would help the citizen that they...huheem.. represent. The average California RAT could give a pant load less about his/her constituents. They care about their power & the and the advancement of the socialist agenda.

Now I know this will NOT set well with Cal. FReepers, but here goes. What is so bad about Davis winning? The situation will only get worse and the socialist agenda will be exposed for all the stupidity that it really is. You can always impeach the idiot. This would be sooooo good for exposing the socialists for exactly what they are. Then of course, my Freeper brothers & sisters would have to live through that, and I couldn't bear thinking that, by wishing, I caused it. So, I am praying that Bill Simon is elected, but unless you change that dirty diaper y'all call a legislature out there, you'll still be standing on your head in the septic tank.

Yours was the same reasoning I employed when I voted for Ross Perot in 1992. If others who thought the same way had voted instead for Bush in '92, we'd have been spared Clinton and all the harm he did to our nation.

Unless something criminal about Davis surfaces or unless it is an absolutely brutal summer in CA with weeks of blackouts and other inconveniences, I believe Davis will be re-elected. People usually pick the devil they know over the one they don't and Simon is really an unknown quantity, although I think he is a good guy and would be great for the state of CA

It's my understanding that there wasn't much snow to melt in the first place and that a warmer than usual spring has melted it all already. I asked a local in the Glen Canyon area how low they would allow Lake Powell to drop before they stopped letting water out and he said there was no limit. As long as electricity was needed and they could turn a good profit on generating it, they would let the water out.

Lake Powell is a very deep lake with some channels as deep as 500 ft.so I guess letting it drop more wouldn't harm the eco-system. My guess is they're making a ton of $$$ selling to CA.

Leave your lights on. Every Blackout will cost Davis votes!

A hot summer. Rolling blackouts. Huge deficits. Vehicle licensing fees going up by a factor of three. Massive tax increases. How will Governor Doofus prevail in the fall.

Blame it on the mean-spirited Republican administration who will refuse to bail out California; the greedy Enron corporate executives, who screwed the state out of billions of dollars, not to mention their employees (oppressed peoples of color, all); and Bill Simon, of course -- who, it will be discovered is/was a major Enron stockholder, in addition to really being a secret Nazi camp guard, of which Davis himself has exclusive photos. < / sarcasm >

No. I'm not bitter. I just know how Davis and the libs will do their hatchet job. (Reference Barbara Boxer's throat-cutting technique on Bruce Herschenson in 1992).

And all the sheep will fall into line in November. Baaaaaah! Because what they will know by them is what this state needs is someone who will take cake of them and protect them from the evil Republicans who want to starve old people and throw single moms out in the street.
