Category 4 Hurricane Katrina is approaching landfall in Eastern Louisiana. At 4:00AM EDT the storm's center was about 90 miles south of New Orleans.

Thank you. That's why I'm trying to find out if East Jeff hospital in Metairie is flooding because of a levee break. If that hospital is flooding, then that's real bad news for my family. The other side of fly lives in Slidell - so I'm bracing for a lot more bad news to come.

postscript: my soon-to-be 3 yr old can now look at a hurricane radar image on TV and identify the "eye." ack.

Our 4 yr old loves to look at the hurricane weather radar. He kept telling us last night to let him look at the storm on the computer.

I just figured he's been grabbing at straws...With everything that was going on and being said yesterday, I thought he seriously believed he was gonna die in this one. Having made it through almost half of the day or storm without the kind of flooding they were talking about, I'd be all woo hoo, looks like it isn't the worst afterall too.

don't worry about the Superdome or any concrete structure. Worry about the rest. I know a guy who lived through Ivan. On Grand Cayman. If it was a wall and floor and it was 10 feet up you were thankful.

No. But the thread is moving fast. Do you know what part of the city the E. Jefferson hospital is in? Did hear a few hours ago of a hospital that had its 1st floor flooded, but I know at least 1 hospital was in one of the lowest areas of the city, so it might not be indicative of the worse overtop flooding.

Yeah, but there are a few good points.

A. The winds are about 125+MPH, which is much better than the 175 we were seeing yesterday.
B. The flooding is not extensive. According to Shep, the French Quarter is still pretty dry.
C. Can't think of a C right now. I'll get back to you.

I was suprised to hear on the news yesterday that the Strategic Reserve could completely replace Gulf area production for over a year. President Bush has been buidling up the reserves since 9-11. They then went on to explain that the real problem, as you point out, is lost refinery capacity.

A feeder band is moving through now. And then there will be one more strong band behind that.

The winds do not decrease in a linear manner. They will lull down a bit and then suddenly jump as a feeder band moves in. That can be a very dangerous time, as people venture out in the relative lull to check on damage and get caught outside in Cat 1 winds surrounded by debris.
