The Buzz About a McCain-Romney Ticket
The New York Times ^ | July 19, 2008 | MICHAEL COOPER and MICHAEL LUO

Posted on 07/18/2008 8:24:36 PM PDT by Plutarch

It was not so long ago that the idea that Senator John McCain would even entertain tapping Mitt Romney, his bitterest primary rival, as his running mate would have seemed preposterous, rating at least 7.0 on the strange-bedfellows scale.

The McCain-Romney feud was the juiciest of the Republican primary season, featuring two men who generally just did not seem to like each other. Mr. Romney said Mr. McCain would set a “liberal Democrat course as president.” He said that one of Mr. McCain’s proudest accomplishments, his campaign finance bill, took “a whack at the First Amendment,” and told voters grappling with money woes that Mr. McCain “has said time and again that he doesn’t understand the economy.” Mr. McCain, for his part, witheringly cast Mr. Romney as a flip-flopper.

But that was then.

These days Mr. Romney, a telegenic former Massachusetts governor, is serving as a wingman extraordinaire for Mr. McCain on cable television. He has dutifully raised money for Mr. McCain. And Mr. Romney has developed a reputation as a campaign surrogate who can talk fluently about the economy, and who has roots in Michigan, an important swing state.

Now Mr. Romney is attracting perhaps more buzz than anyone else as a potential running mate for the man he once derided... [excerpt]

I also was looking for your questions to be answered. Seems those who dislike Mitt Romney fail to give some factual reasons for their dislike.......except maybe that Mitt is a Mormon.

I voted for Mitt in the Primary here in Florida after Fred Thompson dropped out. My dream ticket back then was Thompson/Romney. Still is, but at least with Mitt as McCain’s VP I won’t have to hold my nose when I vote in November.

Your list of conservative leaders who support Romney is correct and sure there are many more. As far as regular folk go, every single conservative I know had either Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter or Mitt Romney as their first three choices.... in various order or course.

Fieldmarshaldj holds the dubious title of master agitator/baiter poster on this forum as most folks know by now. His obsessive/compulsive hate attacks on Mitt Romney know no bounds. He shows up with his poisoned darts on every thread which optomistically invites reasoned and adult debate on the potential-veep decision.

His "search" record will substantiate his bombardments. Like Obama, he swiftly counter-attacks anyone who objects to his Romney-attacks by attacking THEM.

Yesterday, his nom de jour for Mitt was "evil being"...and that was a mild appellation for der Fieldmarshal.

It may not be the perfect ticket, but it is the best ticket - and it is a winning ticket

You're right, it's the winning ticket for scared people whose fear has either made them forget or abandon the truth that our enemy within is Liberalism. You and too many others think that the enemy is the Democrat party; that is false. The poison that has hurt America horribly in the past few decades is Liberalism, and when you support McCain and Romney, you are increasing and strengthening Liberalism.

Not that it matters what Republicans do now, because Democrats will elect these guys. Obama is a joke and millions of Democrats cannot and won't vote for him; but they will easily be able to vote in good conscience for McCain and Romney, who both have proven records of endorsing Liberal philosophy with big government social engineering in energy, health care, and the forced acceptance of open homosexuality by enforcing philosophies and policies that DENY OUR INDIVIDUAL RIGHT to personally discriminate against individuals in private and business life. These two guys embrace the global warming hoax that says in the relative half a blip of a nanosecond that humans have existed here, we can even tell if we're affecting climate, and they are ready and willing to surrender free markets and enact socialist power grabs in the name of "saving the planet," which is like a child declaring she's going to turn your car into a unicorn: silly and ignorant. BUT A LOT MORE DANGEROUS.

Obama will do the same things, but he will be fought on many sides, wherease McCain/Romney will be supported by Democrats and scared-silly Republicans. McCain and Romney guarantee a slide toward increased Liberlism. GUARANTEE IT. With Obama, at least there's a decent fighting chance that we can decrease Liberalism, because Obama, we can fight, and Obama, a huge proportion of Democrats will loathe.

The war here is against Liberalism. The war is NOT against the Democrat party. A vote for a McCain Romney ticket would be handing victory to our enemy -- LIBERALISM.

That, not the Democrat party, is the real enemy. WAKE UP.

I look at the enemy within as being within the Republicrat party. We are getting to be a de facto single-party country, especially if Hagel, as reported this morning by the MSM new interludes on radio, is the top candidate for Obama’s VP. Conservatives are not welcome in the Republicrat party.

Personally, if he is going to do so, I think McCain should pick Romney soon so he can begin touring MI/CO/NV/NH/MA and raising money for the campaign before the convention.

The great thing is that Romney is doing these things any way without being selected so if/when he does get the nod it will really energize the campaign right when we need it most; coming out of the convention.

....leave the real issues to people who actually care about conservative issues, not self indulgence.

I think we all have come to expect the same two or three self-proclaimed conservatives to attempt to hijack every Romney thread and spew their hatred. As far as I'm concerned these people do not exhibit the manners to sit at this table.

I am all for the exchange of ideas. I am not willing to tolerate irresponsible remarks that make Free Republic look foul and sophomoric. The conservative leader of our life time was Ronald Reagan and he would never approve of the hateful attacks from these self proclaimed defenders of the conservative movement.

I am not anti-Romney in general, but our opposition could make lots of anti-McCain ads using nothing but Romney footage.

That is true in all campaigns. The opposition research always has a file full of what was said in the primaries by those duking it out for the nomination. Mitt knows this. He was always very professional and not personal in his attacks on McCain. I cannot think of a single, specific attack Romney made on McCain that would make a good sound bite.

Ignore attack ads in NH (against McCain) from ... Romney. Check

Ignore Romney's dirty tricks, push polls, fake troopers and fake badges. Check

have I got a question for you..

Why did Romney choose to run for Gov in meanie Mass when he could have run for office in Utah ????

Could it be that he was denounced by the Pro-life organizations in Utah as an abortion pusher ???

"Fieldmarshaldj holds the dubious title of master agitator/baiter poster on this forum as most folks know by now."

Hey, I worked HARD to earn the title of number #1 Slick Willard *omney's exposer on this website. That I'm personally hated by his legions of idol-worshipping sycophants I consider to be a badge of honor.

"His "search" record will substantiate his bombardments. Like Obama, he swiftly counter-attacks anyone who objects to his Romney-attacks by attacking THEM."

You mean you sycophants personally attack me, and in some of the most vicious terms imaginable. Because Slick Willard's shameful record cannot stand scrutiny, LIKE Obama's followers, they savagely attack the person for telling the truth on their false Messiah. And, Leni, weren't you one of the head ringleaders in 2006 when I merely pointed out to FReepers about the folly of Katherine Harris's candidacy for the Senate ? The savage hate, vile threats and other obscene attacks from your quarter -- and after all that garbage, everything I said was proven true, and she lost in a landslide. What is it with you guys having a pathological aversion to truth and facts ?

"Yesterday, his nom de jour for Mitt was "evil being"..."

There you go again lying, dear Leni. You were told yesterday and shown the quote:

“...any man who can go on national TV and argue so intensely FOR abortion and even FOR allowing underage girls to get an abortion with or without parental permission as long as she gets a judge’s approval is no conservative, no Republican, no Christian, not even a man at all. Not then. Not now. Not ever. This evil being has no moral bedrock.”

“As soon as Romney falls down on his knees on national TV in front of God and everyone; and repents and begs for forgiveness for all the innocent young lives that were murdered in the womb on his watch after he ran on the pro-abortion platform, then I will consider it. If the man had any integrity at all, he’d resign and spend the rest of his life and the rest of his money trying to undo some of the wrong he’s done. But not as president. That office is reserved for honest men of the highest character and integrity.”

-— Jim Robinson

I'd like to see you trolls savage the founder of this website for his statement on your idol. Let's see how long you'll last on this website. As far as I can see, he has shown the patience of Job for the hundreds of threads and tens of thousands of posts of flamewars you bots have precipitated, wasting endless amounts of bandwith over the past year. If it were up to me, you guys wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes before I deleted your accounts. I don't know how many people have thanked me in private in standing up to you bullies and thugs and your endless parade of propaganda and falsehoods. Many FReepers don't bother getting involved in these "discussions", because they don't care to be personally attacked for voicing their opinion that your idol is a liberal and a 100% total fraud and slick opportunist.

Oh, and btw, it was very curious you guys were more than happy to utilize me (and indeed thank me) earlier this year when I also unapologetically went after Huckster (whom is guilty of about 80% of everything Slick Willard is). What you refuse to understand is that I believe in keeping a clean house, free from liberals or Trojan Horses attempting to hijack our party. That's why I targeted liberal RINOs such as *omney, Huckster, Rudy, and even paleo-nutburgers like Ron Paul, along with McCain (whom frankly needed little convincing amongst FReepers that he was the wrong man for the job). I never attacked Fred or Duncan Hunter because I believed the latter two to be the "Real Deal", with the integrity and intellectual honesty to be running for President as bonafide Conservatives. I'm sorry that some are deliberately aiding and abetting the hijacking of this party by the left. We already have one left-wing party, and we sure as hell don't need two. I am a Conservative FIRST, and when the GOP does "make it official" that it wishes to chart an identical or parallel course to the Democrats, it will deserve to go the way of the Whigs. Some have already given up, I have not. I've spent 22 years doing just that., and I will continue to fight to keep this a Conservative-led party, and I make no apologies for that. Have a nice day.

Slick Willard knew the GOP primary voters of Utah would never have nominated him. He was a liberal by UT Democrat standards (let’s not forget his endorsement of the far-left ACLU leader, SLC Mayoral candidate Rocky Anderson).

He was well to remember the last time a *omney ran for Governor there (his relative, Vern), he had his butt handed to him by a Democrat ! (1976 against Scott Matheson — even as Orrin Hatch knocked off a Dem incumbent and Jerry Ford won by a nearly 2-to-1 margin over Carter).
