Is Fox News Blackballing Fred Thompson?

Is Fox News blackballing Fred Thompson?

Anyone wonder why Fox News Channel rarely mentions the GOP candidate Rush Limbaugh dubbed the only conservative on the stage after one of the ubiquitous “debates.” Wonder why the so called conservative news channel is seemingly so out of step with the leader of the conservative movement?

Undoubtedly many of the DC-NY-Boston conservative pundits/talk show hosts understandably appreciate the job Rudy Giuliani did in making their home and workplaces in NYC liveable. It is understandable that they would like to see one of “their own” carry the GOP banner rather than another Southerner.

But could their be more to the story?

GOP pollster Frank Luntz, famous for the focus group “meter”, admitted effusive praise and gratitude for FNC allowing (hiring) him to appear after every debate, in his Christmas Day appearance on C-Span’s Washington Journal, after one of Redstate’s finest elicited a very revealing response earlier in the program.

The “pilgrim meter” begins at 1:47:30 of the Frank Luntz appearance on the Washington Journal Entire Program (December 25, 2007).

Pilgrim, a regular blogger on Redstate, identified himself as a “leave me the hell alone” Fred Thompson supporter who approves of Fred’s “thumbing his nose at the Washington insiders” campaign that is more focused on internet substance pieces and local press.

Luntz’s nods showed he agreed, but the nod came to an abrupt halt when it appeared pilgrim’s analysis might hit too close to home.

Luntz says Fred’s poor poll numbers are due to one thing. No, not his late entry. No, not the laziness myth. And no, not his age or “trophy wife.”

The reason Fred is behind in Iowa is because he went on Jay Leno’s show rather than appear at a New Hampshire debate on……FOX NEWS CHANNEL.

How petty of Fox.

In this regard, FNC is as bad as the rest. Thompson doesn't and won't dance to their tune, and they don't like it.

It's in their own self-interest to destroy Thompson -- if he can show that a candidate doesn't have to play by the media's rules to win, then many of them are exposed as the pointless wanna-be-gatekeepers that they are.

I don’t think you can blame Fox when you don’t make a great number of appearances even after entering the race late.

If Brit & The Boys denounced Thompson's candidacy on matters of substance, such as having records that clearly confirm nanny-state anti-conservative tendencies (Romney, Giuliani, Huckabee), or of having betrayed Republicans in the past (McCain, Gang of 14), failing to muster more than low single digits in polls (Hunter, sadly), then I could totally respect it.

But the ONLY things they have against Thompson is the totally empty and emotional charge of "laziness." That's it. Thompson consistently polls well within the MOE of Romney, Huck, and McCain. Fred Thompson's record mostly upholds a consistent performance on what he says he believes, whereas Romney's record proves that he has NOT been what he says he is now. Giuliani has said himself that he's not that different from Hillary on many issues. McCain's record is spotty at best, indicative of mental instability at worst. Huckabee's record reveals a frighteningly intrusive nanny-stater. But Brit and his gang stupidly turn their backs on Fred Thompson, deceiving themselves and their viewers in the process. They are traitors to the Fourth Estate.

Brit Hume used to be somebody I respected a lot. Today, he's just another talking head.

That's a myth -- Thompson has had as many, if not more, public appearances than the other GOP candidates. One study from back in November, before the big Iowa push, had him 2nd to McCain in number of appearances.

Awhile back I heard numbers and Thompson was at the back of the pack for appearances. Granted, it has been a month or two since I heard that, but they were raw numbers and nothing to argue with.

Well, clearly that's changed. As I said, in a period covering most of November, he was second only to McCain on the GOP side. Right now he's doing 4-a-days out in Iowa.

Just because Fox doesn't want to acknowledge him doesn't mean he isn't out there doing what it takes. Thompson is meeting with local voters and talking to local press out in Iowa, and the NYC/Beltway crowd can go suck eggs as far as I care.

Probably not, or this interview and report would not have happened:

Fred Thompson on Benazir Bhutto assassination (Fox Interview)
Fred08 ^ | December 27, 2007

Posted on 12/27/2007 11:14:53 AM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

HARRIS FAULKNER : Senator, your reaction, first, to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto.

FRED THOMPSON : It is a tragedy, of course. It reminds us that things can happen in faraway places of the world that can affect the United States. I think this should be of great concern to us. It is almost a perfect storm in a very bad sense because two forces are operating against each other that are both desirable. One is democracy: they were making progress in that regard in that country. Former prime minister Bhutto was an important part of that process. But the other is stability. Pakistan is a nuclear country, and we cannot afford to let nukes fall into the hands of dangerous Muslim radicals. We are hoping those two things can be balanced out. We can see the continued progress toward a democratic society but also maintain stability in the country, which seems to be very much in doubt right now.

FAULKNER: I know you are running for the White House, so I don’t want to put you in a position to second guess the president. But I’m interested in your opinion. President Bush is due to talk with Pervez Musharraf shortly. What do you anticipate that conversation should be like?

THOMPSON: Those two things that I mention probably would be high on the agenda. What could be done to not impose martial law, to not crack down, but be mindful of the fact that there are radical elements in that country, and perhaps even within the government, that would like to see instability and chaos and see those weapons fall into the wrong hands. This is part of a bigger problem. We need to understand that this is not a criminal investigation any more - so we find the bad guys and bring them to justice - it’s a war.

This proves again the mindset of the radical elements that we are dealing with. We are seeing this all across Northern Africa and various places. We’re seeing it across the Middle East and in parts of Asia including Indonesia and other places. We have to come to terms with that and do the things necessary to prevail. One of the things we need to be talking about is what Musharraf can do, additionally, to crack down on the Taliban. I think they have been insufficient in that respect.

FAULKNER : Taliban also supporters of al Qaeda in that country. Pakistan has been an important ally in the war on terror, so have do you walk that line?

THOMPSON: You just walk it. No one said it has been easy and simple. Pakistan has never been easy or simple. I had a chance a few years ago to talk to Musharraf before things got quite as complex as they are now. But it has always been an important part of the world. They’re next door to India. They’ve had a crisis after crisis with regard to them. They’re next door to Afghanistan, and they’re important to us. They’ve been helpful to us. But we’ re going to have to walk that line between democracy on the one hand and stability on the other. But I think it’s possible.

I could be wrong, but seems Fred has avoided appearing on at least some of the shows. Bill O’Reilly said he wanted to have Fred on but Fred has shown no interest.

"Yes, I think they are..."

I think that FNC is little different from the other networks - a bunch of elites who want to nail down control of the presidency. If Hillary isn't elected, then Rudy will do nicely, since the result will be the same. They may favor Rudy over her because they know him better, but Hillary will get the job done for them if he fails to win the election.
