Congressman Will Try to Reinstate Military Draft
A Semi-News/Semi-Satire from AzConservative ^ | 18 Jan 2009 | John Semmens

Posted on 01/19/2009 4:18:35 PM PST by John Semmens

New York Representative Charles Rangel (D) says he plans to reintroduce his bill to reinstate the military draft. “It won’t be right away,” Rangel said. “We’ve got to get the stimulus package finished first. The climate of fear won’t last forever. We’ve got to get and spend this money before the political support dissipates.”

A similar Rangel bill to revive the draft failed by a vote of 402-2 in 2004. Representatives John Murtha (D-Penn) and Pete Stark (D-Calif) were the only ones to vote for it. Rangel voted against it because “the risk of going on record in favor of a draft at that time would have ‘turned off younger voters.’”

This risk is now diminished, Rangel says, because “with Obama as president, the youth of America are eager to defend the nation.” The incoherence of his position didn’t faze the New York Democrat. If American youths are really eager to defend an Obama-led country, why would a draft be necessary?

“A purely voluntary system is inequitable,” Rangel answered. “No matter how widespread the support for the new president, some will choose not to serve. This dilutes the solidarity and undermines the collective experience of the people. If all are compelled to share the burden, all will share an appreciation of freedom. It’s no different, really, from compelling all taxpayers to share the burden of bad loans like we did with the TARP bill.”

Once again, brilliant satire just a little too close to reality for my taste.

hmfph. Numbers of enlisted are over the expected mark and Rangel sees a draft as necessary. What a dolt.

Somebody needs to remind Chuck that Savior O takes office tomorrow, and world peace will come moments later.

So no need for the draft or the military. I’m bringing culture colored marsh mellows to the kumbaya campfire.

I make it a point to greet those I know who voted for the One. I tell them to be sure to tell their grand kids that their vote helped bring back the draft.

Attempting to build a defense force by random selection is illogical. It is like trying to build an Olympic team by similar methods. How well would we have done in Beijing if, rather than having Michael Phelps, we had sent in someone conscripted, given a bathing suit and a few lessons, then plunked down on a starting block?
It is also likely to cause dissension in the ranks, as they will see themselves as ‘losers in Life’s lottery’, rather than doing what they were meant to do

Yours may be satire, or partial satire, but the following is absolutely for real, and important to understand when considering Rangel's thoughts concerning the U.S. military

From the website of the Workers World Party:

"With his leadership, the Korean people defeated the Japanese colonial occupation and soon after brought about the first defeat of the U.S. imperialist military machine. ...

Workers World Party values our close, comradely relations with the Workers Party of Korea very highly. We are proud to have known Kim Il Sung as a great leader and a comrade in the international communist movement. ..."

With comradely solidarity, Sam Marcy Chairperson, Workers World Party" (1994):

Photo of Charlie Rangel at the podium of a March 19th, 2005 Workers World Party/Troops Out Now rally in Harlem, New York. The occasion marked the 2nd anniversary of the start of the Iraq war. The photo comes from the Workers World Party website.

Also appearing at this "peace" rally with the demonRat Charlie Rangel, now chairman of The House Ways and Means Committee, were Saddam Hussein lawyer, Ramsey Clark and convicted terrorist enabler/attorney, Lynne Stewart. Clark, with Workers World Party, started up that other 'peace' group, A.N.S.W.E.R. Clark also heads the International Action Center and was actually once Attorney General of the United States under democrat LBJ.

“A purely voluntary system is inequitable,” Rangel answered.

Get you mind around that illogical BS if you can. What Rangel really wants is to get out of his tax mess. If Obama can do it for the Secretary of the Treasury, he can do it for a brother, a democrat, a valuable legislator. What's a little misprision of a felony among politicians.

I think Rangel has forgotten who was drafted during the Viet Nam war. It was primarily blacks and poor whites who couldn’t get college deferments.

No, Charlie was proposing this almost two years ago, long before his tax problems, as a way of embarassing the Bush Administration.

For entirely wrong reasons, however, Charlie is right. 100% of the burden of defending America is falling on 0.3% (.003) of the population. You know in your heart that that's not fair.

And knock off all the arguments that it's a voluntary force, and the military professionals don't want troublemakers, blah blah blah. Everybody has an obligation to contribute to our protection. Just by saying your're "supporting the troops" won't cut it as you head on down to the mall.

We need a draft, and the drafting priority will be based on family income and net worth, except for all politicians and their families, who go right to the top of the list.

If they want to run the country, they're going to have to serve it first. These families (Kennedy, Clinton, Bush, Reid, etc) think their families have a right of succession to political office. Well add in a right to military service for them also.

Reading your headline was like diving into the Arctic ocean headfirst. A most unpleasant shock to the system. However, your article eventually brought the feeling back to my extremities.

Many thanks for the rush! LOL
