RE the kerning — while some of the characters do crowd together in a way that’s reminiscent of kerning, others are spaced too far apart, and still others are misaligned vertically. Why chalk this up to kerning when it could just be the normal misalignments you get with an old fashioned typewriter?

Why do I criticize WND? Because it has turned itself into birther central and some of the stuff on there is so absurd it's become downright laughable. This is what Farah said the other day:

So, you can’t say it’s an abstract.
Whatever it actually is, they won’t have forgotten anything easy.
Kerning is actually a characteristic of a proportional font. In proportional fonts all characters have their own width and can be put together horizontally not only based on the width of each character but also based on specific pairs of characters. The emphasized part here is kerning. By definition it is not possible in fixed width fonts where each and every character has exactly the same width. Typewriters could only do fixed pitch fonts. Typographers (printers) could do both, but their machines worked on a different principle (going all the way back to inventors of printing.)
So the test here is simple. If the space between 1st and 2nd letter is smaller than expected, check the distance between 2nd and 3rd. If it is larger by the same value then you just have a mechanical error. Either the carriage was slow (one-time error) or the letter was soldered incorrectly to the lever (a consistent error throughout the entire document.) I used to have a typewriter which had letters soldered with a soft solder, so they didn't last long, and I had to reattach them every other month. I got lots of weird prints out of that, and it had nothing to do with a computer :-)

From first hand knowledge, I know that typewriters can do unintenional kerning, particularly if you’re not a smooth typist and the typewriter is in need of cleaning.

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that one letter wouldn’t (or couldn’t) encroach upon the space of another letter the way it does in the blow-up shown in the video.

Your wish is my command :-) Imagine that the carriage is stuck. You press 'a' and it prints 'a'. The carriage doesn't move. Then you press 'p' and 'p' prints over 'a'. So it is easy. This scenario is applicable to all levels of stickiness, from the carriage that is not moving at all to the carriage that is moving perfectly.
One interesting bug occurs in cramped spaces. You type the line, and then the carriage hits something on your desk (or the wall) and stops moving! You keep typing for a second, until you realize that nothing is happening :-)
And on the other side of the story, computers don't do kerning of fixed pitch fonts. If they did then the letters in adjacent rows wouldn't line up, and that would be bad for tables and such. There is a purpose in this madness, after all. The Courier font in the certificate is fixed pitch and you can't get it kerned on a computer, unless you write your own typesetting software (I did that too, many years ago.)
Have you ever typed with a manual typewriter? I wrote a high school paper once using my mom’s college typewriter, an old electric with the keys that swung up and hit the paper, and it was a vibrating mechanical mess. There was lots of opportunity for letters to align in funny ways. I think in this age of computers and laser printers it’s easy to underestimate how much random variation you could get with a typewriter.
People don't need to know the specifics of how steel melts and why buildings collapse to know truther craziness when they hear it. Same goes for birther nonsense. And I certainly know not to trust anything much coming from WND.

Sometimes crazy talk is just crazy talk. I don't believe the moon shots were faked either and certainly don't plan on getting down in the weeds with nutty conspiracy theorists on that issue either.
You can believe this birth certificate conspiracy stuff all you want, but nothing is every going to come of it. Your being played by everyone pushing the issue. Folks like Trump, WND, etc, count on suckers buying into this stuff to sell themselves, sell books and generate website traffic. At this point it's just a scam and your falling for it hook, line and sinker.
