For someone who fought against communism, he had a v e r y cordial, cozy relationship with Fidel Castro.

No Spanish leader can be uncordial with Fidel. Cuba was a populous Spanish province until 1898 and many families have members there.

Fine, but then he can’t claim to be an anti-communist.

Not to speak for the author, but in my opinion Franco was most certainly an anti-communist, as all of his recorded words and deeds attest. He killed hundreds of thousands of communists between 1936 and 1939, and spent the rest of his life keeping them out of Spain. I'd say his anti-communist resume is rock solid.

A personal relationship does not equal political sympathy. Franklin D. Roosevelt had a cordial relationship with Josef Stalin, but Roosevelt, whatever his other failings, was no Stalinist. Franco was friendly with many foreign leaders. I have seen pictures of him embracing Hitler, Evita Peron, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The relationship between the Caudillo of Spain and el Líder Máximo‎ of Cuba was personal. Franco and Castro were both Gallegos. There was also a strategic aspect to the relationship. Cuba was and is a former part of the Spanish Empire, and Spain had few other allies at the time.

"One thing that I am sure of, and which I can answer truthfully, is that whatever the contingencies that may arise here, wherever I am there will be no Communism"
-- Franco, Francisco Franco : The Times and the Man (1938), Joaquin Arraras, p. 158

Sorry, FDR was complicit in Stalin's crimes, in my opinion. And what you say about empire, strategy, alliances and home turf is fine - you can do and be all of that - but then you can't claim to be an anti-Communist. It's like saying you're a vegetarian while you eat lobster.

kabumpo, Fidel couldn’t have siezed power in Cuba without American permission, for the same reason, following your logic, he couldn’t claim to be a Communist.

No, you are wrong.
1. Communists always use deception and fake alliances to achieve their goals.
2. Castro turned on and repudiated the U.S., and made hating the U.S. the focal point of his regime.
