Age Check Just Lost Dick's Sporting Goods a Customer (Vanity)
Vanity | August 26, 2012 | Me

Posted on 08/26/2012 3:34:53 PM PDT by ConservativeInPA

I decided to do some local sporting goods shopping this afternoon before I headed to the gun club. I went to Bass Pro to look for a sling and rifle case for the AR-15A3 that I built Saturday evening. I found the rifle case that I wanted, but no luck finding a sling. As I checked out at Bass Pro, the cashier asked me for my phone number. I firmly said, "No thank you." The cashier typed in a bogus phone number and then asked if wanted to give $2.00 to some charity. Again, a firm, "No thank you." Lastly I was asked if I had a rewards card, "No". Followed by, "Do you want one?" Again, I firmly replied, "No thank you".

I go to Bass Pro a couple times a month. I know the drill. I don't like the questions. I am not going give the cashier a hard time, it's not her fault. But I am not going to appear to be happy, because I want them to know my shopping experience was less than perfect.

Since I didn't find the sling at Bass Pro I went to Dick's Sporting Goods as it was almost on the way to the range. Dick's had an adequate sling with price. It wasn't worth burning time and gas to look elsewhere or to pay extra for shipping for a purchase on the Internet.

So after waiting entirely too long to check out, the cashier asked me for my birthdate. I said, "No". There wasn't a thank you associated with my reply. She said, "You purchase is age restricted." I replied, "I am old enough to be your father." The cashier insisted by saying, "If you don't provide a birthdate, I can not approve your purchase." I retorted, allowing others in line to hear my dismay, "It's a gun sling, there's no law that requires me to provide you with my age." She was stunned that I stood up to protect my privacy and didn't say a thing. I then provided a false birthdate, "4-1-1912" and said "Dick's just lost a customer." My purchase was approved, and some other customers that were swift enough to figure out I wasn't 100 years old and born on April Fools Day had a bit of a laugh. The cashier was completely astonished. Note: I noticed a month or so ago that Dick's started recording birthdates for ammo purchases. There's a law associated with that, but it does not required Dick's to enter your birthday into their computers. I wasn't happy with that and I don't like the law either. I think my children of driving age should be able to buy ammo and go shooting when they want without dad tagging along. They know what they are doing. They have been around guns their entire lives, and are safer than many people on the range.

“...you’re just that jerk that caused me to have to wait for you to make your selfish point in the check-out line ahead of me.......”

Add me to your list of “jerks” (sheeple) for wasting 10 seconds of your precious time.

You weren’t that little sissy-pants behind me in line today at Sears when I refused to give them my phone number when exchanging a pair of broken Craftsman pruners were you?

If so, you wasted a perfectly good hissy-fit.

I have never been able to find anything that was advertised that I actually wanted to buy, they always seemed out of stock and the stuff they did have I could get cheaper either at Walmart or Sport-Authority, both within a 2 block radius.

The only thing I can say positive about Dicks Sporting Goods was the entertainment I got at a company where I worked in the IT department that had an owner that was completely an Internet NOOB. One day he wanted to look up something from the store website and entered in dicks.com. His scream could be heard though out the building, every pop up he closed got him 2-4 more. I just yanked the power cord and rebuilt the PC with a new HDD. To this day I laugh every time I think about it.

It’s defective, isn’t it.

Because a handgun’s sole purpose is to kill people, according to many folks including my late mother.

If you’ve used it all this time and it never killed anybody, it must be broken.

I’ve been to Dick’s once. Made a purchase but haven’t, and won’t be back. Not because of your type of experience. Only because they took over our locally owned store called Gallian’s. Which I used to love shopping at during lunch breaks.

After Dick took over, I found their selection of products went down, and the quality of service. The whole feel of the store felt wrong from what I was used to. Or maybe some PA based company coming in and buying up my local store didnt sit too well.

No matter. I really don’t like Dick’s.

Gallian’s got several $$$$ of my dollars. Dick’s, not so much.

We do have a Gander Mountain now, not far from my - used to be favorite Gallian’s location - and what I wouldnt give for a Cabella’s here.

But hey, not is not all lost. We have Internet shopping with iPads from our easy chairs. Or anywhere else for that matter.

I’m 66 years old and you would never have reason to doubt my age but scanning my drivers license allows them to record and track my purchases and I draw the line in the sand there.

The problem with Texas driver's licenses, is that they store your complete and personal history (that is known to them in their databases) on the magnetic tape, not just your ID #, and active status.

It's one of the reasons they scan it when you buy over the counter cold medication and you are only allowed to buy one per month.

The TPTB just don't need to know certain information, and they have trained the younger generations that there is no harm in just giving the information up, and don't see m to understand why certain people won't comply.... after all, if you've done nothing wrong, there's no harm in giving the information... /s

I was standing in back of a 17-year-old kid in Walmart. They wouldn't let him buy sparklers or a spray can of bicycle chain lube.

I laughed at them.

Funny, they didn’t verify my age for that transaction.

That's because they already have your address and phone number when you ordered.

Nope, that wasn't me, I wasn't at Sears today......

But if I was, I probably would have been upset at you for being so stupid to make a scene rather than just give a bogus phone number like everyone else does. But like I said, some people are just born with a bug up their ass and have to make a point about everything.

I'm glad to hear that you were able to make yours and went home a happy customer.........

We don't have Kroger here...but I was on vacation in Arkansas earlier this month and went there for— things— and the clerk asked if I had my discount card.

I said “no, I'm not from around here.”

She called to the next checkstand and asked if a customer there would let me use their discount cards.

So thanks to the clerk and a little old lady buying her groceries, I got a price break on my— things— and an even better opinion of Southern(ish) Hospitality.

In California I believe you have to give your thumbprint to buy ammo, as well as have your license recorded.

As of a couple of months ago that was not true (I just made a good ammo run), and as far as I know, it is still not true. However, the communists that run this state are always trying to get things like that passed.

“This is the reason I save up and pay cash at the local swap meet or gun show.”

Yup...for everything related. Also a couple of area ‘flea’ markets have provided related needs/wants. Getting ready to check out a local g-show for additional ‘needs’. No generated p’per trails.

Maybe some lazy slobs in the systems programming don’t want to have to code for brand of ammo so they make everything in the gun dept. age restricted?

Probably. There's an old saying: "never ascribe to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence."
