Everyone is looking in the wrong place for the potential story. The story is not when Obama knew of the investigation, but when he knew of the affair.
Timeline:
June 2010. Obama is highly embarrassed by a story in Rolling Stone Magazine in which Gen. Stanley McChrystal makes disparaging remarks about Obama. The war is not going well and the comments make Obama look weak.
June 2010. Barack Obama nominates Petraeus to succeed General Stanley McChrystal as commanding general of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. This is technically a step down from his position as Commander of United States Central Command, which oversees the military efforts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Central Asia, the Arabian Peninsula, and Egypt.
Over the next year Paula Broadwell was embedded with the General in Afghanistan from July 2010 to July 2011 and was "afforded extensive access by General Petraeus” (source: Broadwell’s website). Broadwell co-authors the book " All In: The Education of General David Petraeus". She is also the person with whom we latter learn Petraeus had an affair.
June 2011. Obama abruptly nominate Petraeus to head the CIA. At the time, this seems a very odd move. No one can really explain the move. It is even explained as awkward in a Rueter's story. On June 30, 2011, Petraeus was unanimously confirmed as the next Director of the CIA by the U.S. Senate 94-0. Petraeus relinquished command of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan on July 18, 2011 and retired from the U.S. Army on August 31, 2011.
The earliest beginnings of the affair are reported by the in August 2011. Unnamed CIA source is quoted, “While Mr. Petraeus was still a general, he had email exchanges with the woman, but there wasn't a physical relationship, the person said. The affair began after Mr. Petraeus retired from the Army in August 2011 and ended months ago”. No mention of Broadwell being embedded with Petraeus.
However, if the affair actually happen while Petraeus was in Afghanistan, the sudden reassignment makes sense. Adultery is a serious offense under UCMJ. Given that Broadwell is also a Reserve Officer at the rank of Lt. Colonel, maximum penalty under article 134 is possible. This would include a dishonorable discharge and loss of rank. At a minimum, Congress could not have approved a four star retirement with the knowledge of the affair. Either way, Obama did the General a huge favor by getting him out of the field and back to Washington before the affair became public.
Fox News Jennifer Griffin reported Sunday night that her sources told her it was known in common circles of the affair while Petraeus was still in Afghanistan. Furthermore, her sources said the FBI had to have known of the affair as it would have emerged during the vetting process for Petraeus’s confirmation.
Why would Obama cover for the General? Maybe it was to avoid another embarrassment in Afghanistan? Maybe he likes Petraeus- his with does work for Obama new Consumer Protection Agency. Maybe it was payback for Petraeus taking a step down to lead the war in Afganistan. Either way, the table is turned and Petraeus owes the President.
September 2012. One day after the attack on the Benghazi consulate, now CIA director Petraeus testifies to Congress that the attack was the result of a riot caused by a YouTube video. Republican members of Congress, already receiving intelligence to the contrary (not known to the public at the time), are furious and disappointed in his testimony.
November 2012. After the election Congress is to hold more hearings on Benghazi and recall Petraeus to testify. On November 9, 2012, General Petraeus resigns from his position as Director of the CIA, citing an extramarital affair that was purportedly discovered in the course of an FBI investigation. He will not testify next week.
How much of a favor is Petraeus returning to the President. Although the affair ultimately became public, he retired an honored Four Star General rather than a court martial. He definitely has motive to help the President. Did the FBI not inform Congress of the Affair during the confirmation process? Was Congress aware and proceeded with his retirement rank anyways?
Did Petraeus just cover for the President inept handling of Benghazi supporting cover-up video story or does it go deeper. Does he know about the gun running to Syria? Does he know Obama has been arming Muslim Brotherhood elements? Does he know if the US is supplying arms to Al-Qaeda, a sworn enemy of the United States?
...an investigation of the head of the CIA does not go forward without the full knowledge of the POSIC.

According to your scenario, Petraeus 1st did Obama a favor by taking over for McCrystal, and the Obama did Patraeus a favor by not revealing the affair. SO they’re even. Why should Patraeus then do Obama another favor by retelling the video story in Benghazi story?
My feeling is that Patraeus went with the video story in order to try to keep cover on a covert operation in Benghazi. Broadwell referenced a CIA detention center at the annex in a speech she gave in Oct. at DU.

Apparently, you don’t realize that if it weren’t for the Patraeus story, Benghazi wouldn’t be mentioned at all.

That is why the cover story of the affair starting recently. Not when she was flying around A-stan in the good GEN’s military aircraft. Right, whatever.
Everything is too perfectly choreographed for this to be just blackmail. Petraeus has to be on Team Kenya.
Why did he not offer his resignation when he admited the affair to the FBI? Remember, the FBI was asking about classified documents on his “girlfriend’s” computer! Does not compute. The proper time to resign was THEN not 3 days after the election.
If the CIA was conducting a covert detention center, it needed to be kept secret from the rest of the world.
Unless the GOP is Impeaching Obama over Libua-gate...nothing will happen to anyone in the long run
I’m glad he waited until after the election - the race was so close, I don’t think it would have helped Romney at all and can certainly understand how it might have gone against Republicans.
Obama kept the affair in his pocket to control the general.
This theory would then implicate Obama for both knowing and lying about this scandalous affair. This only points the gun at Obama’s head for Congressional inquiries and possible impeachment.

“Was embedded”....by whom? Who is it that decides these things, okays them and so on and “affords access”? The passive sentence structure takes out the performer.
Yes, but I doubt he will be charged with perjury.
